Compare rigid and flexible conduit materials and identify the trade size for compatible fittings.

Medium-Wall (IMC) and Thick-Wall (RMC) Metal Conduit and Fittings

Image of System. Front orientation. Conduit and Fittings. Medium-Wall (IMC) and Thick-Wall (RMC) Metal Conduit and Fittings.
The industry standards, IMC and RMC conduit systems offer the most durable protection indoors, outdoors, and underground. Both types have the same outside diameter, so they use many of the same fittings. This interchangeability makes retrofits easier and reduces the parts you need to keep on hand.

Rigid Plastic (PVC) Conduit and Fittings

Image of System. Front orientation. Conduit and Fittings. Rigid Plastic (PVC) Conduit and Fittings.
A nonconductive and lightweight alternative to rigid metal conduit, PVC conduit won’t break down from moisture or chemicals. It protects runs of wiring outdoors, underground, or encased in concrete. PVC cement (not included) is required when joining conduit to fittings with push-in connections.

Flexible Plastic (MPT) Conduit and Fittings

Image of System. Front orientation. Conduit and Fittings. Flexible Plastic (MPT) Conduit and Fittings.
Bend, twist, and wrap machine wiring through tight spaces. Corrugated like ENT, this conduit is more resilient against repeated flexing. Pair it with compatible fittings to seal out liquid and protect wiring indoors and outdoors. Conduit and fittings are made of nylon to resist moisture and chemicals.

Thin-Wall (EMT) Metal Conduit and Fittings

Image of System. Front orientation. Conduit and Fittings. Thin-Wall (EMT) Metal Conduit and Fittings.
With a thinner wall, this conduit is a lighter alternative to IMC and RMC. The most common choice for indoor walls and ceilings, it shields wiring from scrapes and bumps. EMT can dent or crush from impact, however, so it should be routed away from high‑traffic areas where carts and vehicles pass through.
