Keep a range of sizes on hand to lock the ends of clevis pins and shafts and keep components in place. Slide these cotter pins into a hole and then bend the prongs outward with pliers to secure. Also known as split pins, one prong is slightly longer than the other for easy opening once inserted. Repeated bending will weaken the pin, so they should not be reused.
Zinc-Plated Carbon Steel—These pins withstand occasional exposure to moisture. However, since friction from moving parts can wear away the finish, they're not ideal for wet environments. While not nearly as corrosion resistant as stainless steel, they are stronger and won’t deform under stress.
18-8 Stainless Steel—The choice for wet and outdoor environments, these pins resist rusting. They are strong enough to join most components but won't withstand extreme stress and vibration as well as steel.

These pins come in a range of sizes to fit various clevis pin diameters, and you can install them in a single step. One prong is already bent, so just push them into a hole and pins stay in place to secure components. Although hairpins are reusable, they don’t withstand vibration as well as standard cotter pins. Also known as hitch pin clips and R-clips.
Zinc-Plated Spring Steel—These pins withstand occasional exposure to moisture. However, since friction from moving parts can wear away the finish, they're not ideal for wet environments. While not nearly as corrosion resistant as stainless steel, they are stronger and won’t deform under stress.

A range of sizes to fit a variety of shaft diameters. Snap these clips into a groove instead of inserting through a hole. They're an alternative to retaining rings for easy installation since you can install and remove by hand. Clips are reusable like retaining rings but more likely to loosen from vibration.
