    Peel-Away Multilayer Shim Stock

Image of ProductInUse. Front orientation. Shim Stock. Peel Away, Sold Individually, Multilayer.
Fine-tune thickness without worrying about stacking multiple shims. Cut the shim stock into custom shapes that suit your needs. It's made of layers of material bonded with adhesive—peel off the layers with a utility knife until you reach your desired thickness. To make peeling easier, warm the created shims to soften the adhesive. With thickness tolerances as fine as a strand of hair, the shims will precisely align, space, and level components on dies, presses, and machinery.
18-8 Stainless Steel—The choice for wet and outdoor areas because it resists rust. However, it will corrode or pit when exposed to salt water and chemicals.
Carbon Steel—Best for dry areas since moisture will cause it to rust.
Brass—Picked for its warm, polished look. Similar to 18-8 stainless steel, it resists rusting in wet and outdoor areas.
Polyimide—Originally designed for military aircraft, it’s used in everything from aerospace to electronics where weight, electrical insulation, and precision are vital.
Temper Rating—Choose half hard to create shims that you’ll need to bend or shape. Opt for full hard to make stronger shims that will maintain their shape under loads.

    Peel-Away Multilayer Made-to-Order Shims

Image of Product. Front orientation. Shims. Multilayer, Sold Individually, Made-to-Order, Peel Away.
If you need a unique peel-away shim shape or size, we’ll precision cut it for you. Use these shims to fine-tune thickness without worrying about stacking multiple shims. They're made of metal layers bonded with adhesive—peel off the layers with a utility knife until you reach your desired thickness. To make peeling easier, warm the shims to soften the adhesive. With thickness tolerances as fine as a strand of hair, all of these shims precisely align, space, and level components on shafts, arbors, and machinery.
Send your dimensioned DWG, DXF, IGES, or STEP file to sales@mcmaster.com. Please leave at least 1/8" wall between shim edge and holes. Minimum hole size is 1/4". Shims should be no smaller than 1" × 1" square or 1" OD. Maximum shim dimension is the largest overall length, width, or diameter of your custom shim.
18-8 Stainless Steel—The choice for wet and outdoor environments, these shims resist rust. However, they’ll corrode or pit when exposed to salt water and chemicals.
Carbon Steel—Best for dry environments since moisture will cause these shims to rust.
Aluminum—These shims are an alternative to stainless steel for rust resistance but aren't as hard so they may not retain their shape as well. One-third the weight of steel, they’re commonly used in robotics and automation.
Brass—With a warm, polished look, these shims are often chosen for their appearance. Similar to 18-8 stainless steel, brass is corrosion resistant enough to stand up to wet environments.
Material Certificate—Shims include a report with a traceable lot number.
