Step 3: Match Flattened Strip to

    Reading Card

Squish these tiny plastic strips between two components to measure the clearance between them. Once compressed, match the widest part of the flattened strip to the markings on the reading card. Each marking on the card corresponds to a different clearance measurement. For large bearings and wide surfaces, use two or more strips to check for inconsistency.
Originally designed to check clearances in automotive bearings, these strips also work with cylinder heads, flanges, and other fitted parts. Although generally less precise than calipers and hole gauges, they take clearance measurements in spots that can't be reached after the part is assembled.

Wire, Width, and Thickness Feeler Gauge Sets

Image of Product. Front orientation. Feeler Gauges. Wire, Width, and Thickness Feeler Gauge Sets.
These sets combine a wire gauge, a tapered-width feeler gauge, and a set of feeler gauges for tight spots in one tool. The tapered-width gauge is designed for measuring hole and slot widths and diameters. The feeler gauge leaves check the thickness of slots, gaps, and alignment; each leaf is marked with thickness. Leaves are riveted together in a fan design that folds up for portability.

Image of Product. Front orientation. Feeler Gauges. Tapered-Width Feeler Gauge Sets.
Check slot widths and hole diameters with the markings on these gauges. Leaves in a variety of sizes are riveted together in a fan design—spread them out for use or fold them in for portability. Each leaf narrows toward the tip to measure a range of sizes. Slide them into a hole until the gauge sits snug and then read the width measurement.
Steel—Steel gauges are stronger, harder, and more wear resistant than stainless steel gauges.
Stainless Steel—Stainless steel gauges are less likely to rust than steel gauges.

    Gauge with Breakaway Notches

Image of Product. Front orientation. Feeler Gauges. Tapered-Width Feeler Gauges.
Confirm slots, holes, and mating surfaces on parts are properly sized. Narrow at one end, these feeler gauges measure a range of sizes. Slide them into a hole until the gauge sits snug and then read the width measurement. All have a range of width markings for quick reference. Made of either stainless steel or plastic, they resist corrosion.
Plastic—Plastic feeler gauges won’t spark if struck and are nonmagnetic. This makes them safe to use with spark plugs and other electronic ignitions. Since they’re nonmarring, they won’t scratch nearby surfaces. Snap away lengths at the breakaway notches to get a snug fit across the width of shallow holes.
