About Sound Levels
Measured in decibels (dB), volume ratings indicate how much noise equipment makes. Some common volume levels include a whisper @ 20 dB, a refrigerator @ 40 dB, a conversation @ 60 dB, and a light machine shop @ 90 dB. OSHA recommends hearing protection for exposure to 80 dB and greater.

High-Output Hazardous Location Spark-Resistant Blowers

Powerful and durable, these blowers are able to blow air through larger systems that have more airflow resistance than standard hazardous location spark-resistant blowers can handle. They have an explosion-proof motor that is UL listed for Class I, Divisions 1 and 2, Groups C and D; and Class II, Divisions 1 and 2, Groups E, F, and G hazardous locations. They also have an aluminum housing for spark resistance. These blowers install in ductwork similar to duct fans, but are for use where high static pressures are present. Use them for equipment cooling, material conveying, drying, ventilating, and exhausting.
Note: Airflow depends on the resistance created by ductwork. This resistance, known as static pressure (SP), is measured in inches of water.

Hazardous Location Chemical-Resistant Blowers
These blowers have an explosion-proof motor that is UL listed and CSA certified for Class I, Divisions 1 and 2, Group D; and Class II, Divisions 1 and 2, Groups F and G hazardous locations. For resistance to chemicals as well as corrosion, they have a plastic housing. They install in ductwork similar to duct fans, but are for use where high static pressures are present. Use them for equipment cooling, material conveying, drying, ventilating, and exhausting. All blowers have a totally enclosed motor enclosure, which can be used in dirty, dusty, and damp environments.
Note: Airflow depends on the resistance created by ductwork. This resistance, known as static pressure (SP), is measured in inches of water.
Fiberglass housing withstands organic chemicals, such as ammonia, antifreeze, and mineral oils.
PVC plastic housing offers greater chemical resistance than the fiberglass housing. It resists strong oxidizing acids such as sulfuric acid but will not withstand contact with perchloric acid.

Belt-Drive Hazardous Location Duct Fans

These fans have an explosion-proof motor that is rated for hazardous environments. All are belt-drive fans that are quieter and have a longer life span than direct-drive fans because components can be replaced if worn or damaged. They install inline in ductwork for use as an exhaust, supply, or booster fan. Fans rated IP44 have a motor enclosure that's rated for protection in damp environments. Fans rated IP56 have a motor enclosure that’s rated for protection in damp, dusty, and washdown environments. UL, CSA, and EEV standards apply to the motor.
Note: Airflow depends on the resistance created by ductwork. This resistance, known as static pressure (SP), is measured in inches of water.

Hazardous Location Exhaust Fans

These fans have a motor that is UL listed for hazardous environments. Use them to draw stagnant and humid air out of a room or area. All are direct-drive fans and have fewer moving parts than belt-drive fans for less maintenance.
Collars and louvers are sold separately. Use a collar to connect a wall-mount exhaust fan to a louver.

Hazardous Location Jet Stream Fans
Often used to cool warehouse aisles and production lines, these fans generate a stream of air that travels farther than air from conventional fans. All fans have a totally enclosed motor enclosure, which can be used in dirty, dusty, and damp environments. Fans with wheels can be rolled into place before they are hardwired. They do not allow for movement once the unit is in use.
Direct-drive fans have fewer moving parts than belt-drive fans for less maintenance.
Belt-drive fans are quieter and have a longer life span than direct-drive fans because components can be replaced if worn or damaged.

Hazardous Location Floor Fans
Often used in welding shops and oil refineries, the motor in these fans is rated as safe for use around flammable and combustible gas, vapor, and dust. As a belt-drive motor, it’s quieter than direct-drive motors and has a longer life span because its components are replaceable. The motor is totally enclosed for protection in dusty and damp environments. These fans are freestanding, so there’s no mounting required. They have wheels for rolling into place before they’re hardwired, but don’t allow for movement once they’re in use.

Hazardous Location Equipment-Cooling Fans

Safely cool electronics and equipment where explosive gases could be present due to equipment failure. ATEX certified, these fans meet European standards for hazardous locations. They’re also IP rated, so they seal out dust and are protected from water if briefly submersed. All have ball bearings that decrease noise for quiet operation. Their bearings reduce heat as they run as well, extending their life.

Hazardous Location Equipment-Cooling Fan Kits
Cool electronics and other sensitive equipment in potentially unsafe areas. These fans are non-sparking, so they’re safe for use around gas and explosive dust. They also withstand washdowns, occasional submersion in water, and wet weather. They’re not for use in mines. Ball bearings reduce the heat that’s generated to prolong fan lifespan.

Hazardous Location Mobile Evaporative Air Coolers

These air coolers are rated for environments where hazardous material is present. Also known as swamp coolers, they take in water, which soaks into pads. When air is blown through the wet pads, the evaporation produces cool air. Coolers have leads for hardwiring or use with a hazardous location electrical plug. Replacement pads are sold separately.
Hazardous location environmental ratings indicate whether manufacturers have included safety features in products to facilitate their safe use in a hazardous environment. Before selecting a product for a hazardous location, ensure it is rated for your environment. See About Hazardous Location Environmental Ratings.
