A material's resistance to temperature and its ability to block heat are important factors to consider when choosing thermal insulation.
R-value measures the material's capacity to slow heat flow; the higher the R-value, the better the material insulates. The chart shows R-value for 1" thick insulation. To calculate the R-value of additional thicknesses, divide the material's thickness by its heat flow rate, which is also known as K-factor.
Heat flow rate is the measurement of the heat flow from one side of the insulation to the other. The lower the rating, the better the material insulates.
Use the chart to find the insulation material that best suits your application. The ratings are provided for comparison only and are not intended for design purposes. If insulating below 0° F, use polyethylene foam, foam rubber, aerogel, or polyimide insulation.
The lowest-density insulation we offer, these sheets are made of lightweight melamine foam. To use outdoors, add metal jacketing or a coating. Seal with reinforced insulation tape (sold separately).
Sheets with kraft paper facing have added impact resistance.
