Full-Groove Dowel Pins
Grooves run the full length of these pins for a firm hold that won't spin. Use them in place of standard dowel, spring, and taper pins to fasten parts. The three grooves pinch shut when pressed into a hole, creating tension to lock pins in place. For the best fit, the hole should be equal to or slightly larger than the diameter shown. The ends are chamfered for easy insertion. Breaking strength is measured as double shear, which is the force required to break a pin into three pieces. Also known as type A pins.
Pins with parallel grooves fit more tightly than pins with tapered grooves, so they’re less likely to loosen from vibration. However, they require more force to insert. Pins that meet ISO 8740 comply with international standards for parallel-groove metric dowel pins.
Zinc-plated steel pins have good strength and some corrosion resistance.

Half-Groove Dowel Pins
These pins make good hinges or pivots. The grooves pinch shut when pressed into a hole, creating tension and holding the pin in place. The grooved half locks pins in position, while the smooth half acts as a pivot. For the best fit, the hole should be equal to or slightly larger than the diameter shown. The ends are chamfered for easy insertion. Pins are made of zinc-plated steel for good strength and some corrosion resistance. Breaking strength is measured as double shear, which is the force required to break a pin into three pieces. Also known as type H pins.
Tapered pins are good when part of the assembly must be a free fit.

Cotter Pins
Also known as split pins, these have one prong slightly longer than the other so they’re easy to open. Bend prongs outward to secure. Use them to secure the ends of clevis pins and shafts to keep components in place.
Steel pins have good strength. Pins with a zinc-plated finish have some corrosion resistance.
18-8 stainless steel pins offer a balance of strength and corrosion resistance. They may be mildly magnetic. Passivated pins offer added protection against corrosion and oxidation.
