High-Load Side-Mount External Retaining Rings

Also known as poodle rings, these have thick "ears" to withstand high force. Compared to other side-mount rings, they have more than double the thrust load capacity, but leave less space for surrounding parts. Push into the groove with a side-mount retaining ring tool.
Ring OD is measured with the ring uninstalled.
Phosphate-Coated Carbon Steel—The most popular choice, these are strong and wear resistant. Their finish adds some corrosion resistance, but only to minimal dampness.
15-7 PH Stainless Steel—Combine strength with corrosion resistance. While harder than most stainless steel rings, these will dent and scratch easier than carbon steel ones.
