Configure instructions for electronic devices by sliding actuators to open or close each circuit. The actuators also make it easy to see your settings without turning on equipment. Since the contacts are gold plated, they have better conductivity and resist heat better than nickel-plated contacts. Push the contacts through holes in your circuit board, then solder them in place.

Circuit Board DC Magnetic-Object Proximity Switches

Send signals in response to changing magnetic fields to trigger processes or monitor position, speed, and current. These switches communicate with devices such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and microcontrollers. They’re also known as hall effect sensors. To install, push their contacts through holes in a circuit board, then solder them in place.
Maintained switches change their output signal based on the polarity of a magnetic field. They’re often used to monitor movement, such as tracking the speed and position of a shaft. These switches output a high-voltage signal when they detect a north pole, and a low-voltage signal for a south pole. When the magnetic field is removed, they maintain the same output signal.
Momentary switches change their output signal based on whether a magnetic field is present. They’re often used to trigger a process in response to changing magnetic fields, such as turning on a light when a door opens. When they detect a north or south pole, they output a low-voltage signal. When they don’t detect a magnetic field at all, they output a high-voltage signal.

Smaller than relays with electrical wiring, these relays fit in compact devices. Mount them through holes on circuit boards with their solder pin terminals. Use them to control heaters, fans, and other high-power components from a low-power circuit.
Solid state relays have no moving parts, so they require less maintenance and last longer, switch faster, and are quieter than mechanical relays.

Circuit Board Safety Relays
![](/prerenderstable/mvPRE/contents/gfx/imagecache/625/6253n11c1-@halfx_fac64_1715616279.png?ver=imagenotfound)
Reduce connection errors on circuit boards that control machine guards and other safety devices. Also known as force-guided contact relays, they have contacts that won’t close at the same time, causing contacts to stick or weld shut. These relays take up less space on a board than those with electrical wiring because their solder pin terminals mount directly through circuit board holes. Use them to control high-power components, such as fans and heaters, from a low-power circuit.

Transistors
Amplify or control electric signals. Transistors are often used to boost weak electrical signals or as switches to rapidly control data transmission and computing signals. The transistor's leads are ordered from left to right with the flat side facing you. The incoming current you intend to control is sent to the emitter (E) for NPN transistors or the collector (C) for PNP transistors. The base (B) controls how much current flows through the transistor. Then current is output to your application through the collector pin for NPN transistors or the emitter pin for PNP transistors.
When you send current to the base, you can control the current flow between the collector and emitter leads. NPN transistors use positive current and voltage at the base to control current flowing from the collector to the emitter. PNP transistors use negative current and voltage at the base to control current flowing from the emitter to the collector.
Maximum current gain is the highest multiplication factor the transistor can boost the current.
