Spider Couplings

With two hubs gripping a rubbery spider in the center, these couplings damp vibration and transfer torque while flexing to handle misaligned shafts. The metal hubs never touch each other, so there's no need for lubrication. Also known as Lovejoy® couplings. For a complete coupling, select two hubs and one spider or two hubs, one split spider, and one retaining ring. Choose components with the same trade size to ensure they'll fit together.

Hubs

The metal body mounts onto shafts to transmit torque from one shaft to the other through the flexible center.

Keyed—Mount onto shafts with a matching keyway.

Iron—Best for dry environments, since moisture will cause these hubs to rust.

Set-Screw Shaft Mount—Screws dig into your shaft for a secure hold.

Spiders

A flexible center fits between hubs to enable torque transfer and damp vibration.

Buna-N—Best choice for vibration damping and shock absorption with the lowest stiffness and good tear resistance.

Polyurethane Rubber—Superior tear resistance to Buna-N and Hytrel and a good balance of stiffness and vibration damping.

Hytrel—Most direct torque transfer with the highest stiffness and least vibration damping.

Split Spiders

Unlike standard spiders, you can install these without using tools, removing hubs, or realigning shafts. Hold them in place with a retaining ring.

Retaining Rings

Press the pins on these rings into the grooves on a split spider. Then, twist to lock the spider in place and transmit torque between shafts.

High-Misalignment Tire Couplings

With a large, flexible rubber tire, these withstand the highest misalignment of any coupling while reducing vibration. For a complete coupling, select two hubs, one tire, and two bushings. Choose components of the same trade size to ensure they'll fit together.

Hubs

The metal body mounts onto shafts to transmit torque from one shaft to the other through the flexible center.

Iron and Steel Hub—Best for dry environments, since moisture will cause these hubs to rust.

Clamp-On Shaft Mount—Grip shafts evenly without marring them and hold tighter than set screws. Tighten the clamping screws to secure.

Set Screw Shaft Collars

Slide these traditional collars from one end of the shaft and tighten the set screw. They dig into the shaft for a secure hold, but one that leaves a gouge. For maximum holding power, make sure the set screw is harder than the shaft.

Black-Oxide Carbon Steel—Dark and matted for a finished look, but with minimal corrosion resistance. Best for dry environments.

Zinc-Plated Carbon Steel—A step up from plain carbon steel collars, these withstand occasional exposure to moisture.

303 Stainless Steel—Withstand moisture and mild cleaning solutions, such as acetone and ammonia. These are easier to machine than other stainless steel collars.

Aluminum—One-third the weight of steel and corrosion resistant.

Shaft Collars

Two-Piece Shaft Collars

For Round Shafts

Attach these collars anywhere along your shaft, which helps when other components are already installed or you can't access the end. They clamp firmly and evenly without marring the shaft, so you can reposition or remove collars later.
