    Chip-Clearing Tap and Drill Bit Sets for Through Holes

    Also known as gun taps, the taps in these sets have spiral-point flutes that push chips ahead of the tap and out of through holes. Because they don't need to be reversed to prevent buildup, they produce threads more efficiently than standard taps and are suitable for production work. Taps have a square shank for compatibility with tap wrenches and tap holders for drill presses and milling machines. With a plug chamfer, they have 3-5 chamfered cutting threads, so they're suitable for start-to-finish tapping. All taps and drill bits are made of high-speed steel for use on most metal and plastic.

    Uncoated High-Speed Steel Tap—Uncoated high-speed steel taps have a longer tool life than carbon steel. They are strong enough for most jobs but don’t last as long as other high-speed steel taps. Use them for small-scale jobs.
    Uncoated Cobalt Steel Tap—Uncoated cobalt steel taps have higher strength and wear resistance than carbon steel and high-speed steel taps.
    Black-Oxide High-Speed Steel Tap—Black-oxide high-speed steel taps have a longer tool life than carbon steel. They cut with less friction than uncoated taps.
    Titanium Nitride (TiN)-Coated High-Speed Steel Tap—Titanium nitride (TiN)-coated high-speed steel taps have a longer tool life than carbon steel. They resist heat and wear better than uncoated taps, letting them last up to twice as long.
    Plug Chamfer—Plug-chamfer taps are a versatile choice for most tapping applications. With 3-5 chamfered cutting threads, they require moderate torque and are often used for start-to-finish tapping of through holes and closed-end holes. However, they do not start threads as easily as taper chamfers. When using them to tap closed-end holes, be sure to leave sufficient space at the bottom for chips to accumulate.
    Black-Oxide High-Speed Steel Drill Bit—Black-oxide high-speed steel drill bits have a longer tool life than carbon steel. They cut with less friction than uncoated drill bits.
    Gold-Oxide High-Speed Steel Drill Bit—Gold-oxide high-speed steel drill bits have a longer tool life than carbon steel.

    Tough and wear resistant, cobalt steel bits last at least twice as long as high-speed steel. They can also run up to 25% faster at higher temperatures without being damaged on hard materials, such as nickel.

    The hardest and most wear-resistant bits, these deliver coolant to reduce heat and evacuate chips. They are designed for CNC machines that supply coolant through the spindle rather than an external source, such as a hose and nozzle. Coolant flows directly from holes in the bit's tip onto the drilling surface. This speeds up cuts and leads to excellent performance in deep holes and tough materials such as stainless steel and titanium.
    Maintenance Length—Shorter than jobbers' length, these bits are more rigid for less wobble when drilling hard material. Also known as mechanics’ bits.
    Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN) Coated—No drill bits last longer. These are the best for high-speed, high-temperature drilling of very hard and abrasive materials, including titanium and fiberglass.
