About Files
Files, also known as American-pattern and machinists' files, are used to remove material quickly.
Precision files, also known as Swiss-pattern files, are made to exacting measurements to ensure smoothness and are useful for finishing delicate and intricate parts.

Rectangular Files

Files do not include a handle but do have a tang that fits into a handle. Length does not include the tang.
Single Cut—Surface has one set of diagonal teeth and is often used with light pressure to slowly remove material and sharpen tool-cutting surfaces.
Edges with no teeth protect adjacent surfaces when filing.

Single-cut tapered files with teeth on the edges are often used to sharpen milling and circular saws. Also known as mill files.
Single-cut tapered files with no teeth on the edges are often used to shape material on a lathe. Also known as lathe files.
Black-oxide finish resists rust and clogging.

Integrated-Handle Rectangular Files
No need for a separate handle—these files have one built in. Length does not include the handle.
Double Cut—Surface has two sets of diagonal teeth and is often used with heavier pressure than single cut for rapid material removal.
Single Cut—Surface has one set of diagonal teeth and is often used with light pressure to slowly remove material and sharpen tool-cutting surfaces.
Edges with no teeth protect adjacent surfaces when filing.
Files with steel handles have a single-piece construction. Files with rubber-coated plastic handles have a cushioned, comfortable grip.

Straight files are also known as hand files.
Files with a black-oxide finish resist rust and clogging.

Files for Painted Surfaces

Shave bumps and dried paint drips off the wall without scuffing the surrounding area. These files are also known as denibbing files since paint imperfections are commonly called nibs. Use light pressure to slowly remove material with their diagonal teeth. These files are reversible: one side takes care of large drips, while the other creates a fine finish. The file sits inside of a rubber-coated steel handle and is magnetic, so you can easily flip between sides. The hold is strong enough that it won’t pop out while you’re filing.

Bend-and-Stay Needle Files

Bend these files to conform to your workpiece and they will hold the shape until you bend them again. They can be bent more than 100 times without breaking. The small tip allows precise work in tight spots. Files have one set of diagonal teeth. They do not include a handle but do have a tang that fits into a handle. Length does not include the tang.
Half-round files can be used on concave, convex, and flat surfaces.
Round files are good for filing holes and concave surfaces.
Triangular files have three filing surfaces to work in spots others can't.
Square files are good for slots, keyways, grooves, and corners.
