Fire Extinguishers for Metals

Smother the flames when metal flakes, powder, or shavings catch fire. These extinguishers are filled with a compound that dissipates heat and cuts off air to stop the metal from burning. They’re rated Class D to put out fires in combustible metals, such as magnesium, sodium, and potassium. Built to last, these extinguishers have brass hardware that resists corrosion and holds up to impacts.
Extinguishers with sodium chloride put out fires by forming a crust that smothers the flames. They’re the most common choice for fighting combustible metal fires.
Extinguishers with copper were developed by the U.S. Navy to fight fires on lithium and lithium alloys. However, they’re not effective at putting out fires on lithium-ion batteries—use a lithium-ion battery extinguisher instead.
