Clear—Clear coatings are frequently used on wood—use one coat on sealed wood and two on unsealed. They can be used outside without breaking down, but prolonged exposure to UV light may cause them to yellow.

Flame-Retardant Protective Coatings for Wood

Use these coatings on structural lumber, decking, and wood shingles. Apply with a brush, pad, roller, or sprayer. Reapply every five years on exterior wood; coatings protect interior wood indefinitely. Once fully cured, they can be painted over with water-based paint.
