    A lead-free alternative to 12L14, 1215 carbon steel contains the same amount of sulfur and phosphorus for excellent machinability. It’s often used for shaft couplings, studs, and pins. For added wear resistance, you can harden its surface with heat treating.

    Splined Rotary Shafts

    Often used in hydraulic and other high-torque applications, these shafts have evenly spaced teeth to transmit heavy rotational loads. They handle more torque and last longer than keyed shafts since they have multiple contact points. Pair them with splined sleeve bushings (sold separately). Compatible bushings and components slide right along the splines, making these shafts a good choice for frequent disassembly and adjustments.

    The large, straight-sided teeth resemble machine keys and transmit more torque than involute-spline teeth. These shafts are fully splined, so you can mount components anywhere along their length.
    Carbon Steel—Strong and easy to machine. These shafts work best in dry environments since moisture will cause steel to rust.
    Sleeve Bushings—Transmit rotary motion or position loads along a shaft. These bushings also work as couplers—they can join two splined shafts when welded into place.
