Keep a variety of flanged screws and nuts on hand so you always have the size you need. The flange distributes pressure where the fastener meets a surface, so you don’t need a separate washer. They come in a metal box with a removable tray. Screw length is measured from under the flange.

Grade 5 and Class 8.8 steel fasteners are suitable for fastening most machinery and equipment. They’re plated with either zinc or zinc yellow chromate to resist corrosion in wet environments.

Grade 8 and Class 10.9 steel fasteners can be used in high-stress applications, such as on valves, pumps, and motors. They’re about 25% stronger than Grade 5 and Class 8.8 steel fasteners, but they'll corrode in wet environments. Class 10.9 fasteners don’t have a coating and require little surface prep before applying a finish, so you can apply your own paint or coating.

18-8 stainless steel fasteners are ideal for wet and outdoor environments. They have good chemical resistance and may be mildly magnetic.
