About Selecting Shock Absorbers
To select the best shock absorber for your application, you need to find the energy capacity your application requires. Use this formula to calculate the energy capacity required to stop a horizontal-moving load. For example, if you have a 250-lb. load moving at 25 inches per second, your calculation is (250 lbs. ÷ 772) × 252 = 202.4 in.-lbs. energy capacity.
Note: Choose a shock absorber with a higher energy capacity than you calculated. Factors such as driving force or an inclined surface will increase the energy capacity required.
Energy Capacity (in.-lbs.) = (Weight, lbs./772) × Velocity2 (in. per second)

Medium-Strength Steel Thin Hex Nuts

Also known as jam nuts, these are about half the height of standard hex nuts. Use them in low-clearance applications or jam one against another nut to hold it in place. They're suitable for fastening most machinery and equipment when used in conjunction with a standard hex nut.
Zinc-plated steel nuts resist corrosion in wet environments.

Left-Hand Threaded Medium-Strength Steel Thin Hex Nuts

These nuts tighten when turned to the left; once fastened, they resist loosening from counterclockwise motion. Also known as jam nuts, they are about half the height of standard hex nuts. Use them in low-clearance applications or jam one against another nut to hold it in place. They're suitable for fastening most machinery and equipment when used in conjunction with a standard hex nut. A zinc plating provides corrosion resistance in wet environments.

High-Strength Steel Thin Hex Nuts—Grade 8

Also known as jam nuts, these are about half the height of standard hex nuts. Use in low-clearance applications or jam one against a standard hex nut to hold it in place. They're about 25% stronger than medium-strength steel thin hex nuts.
Zinc yellow-chromate-plated steel nuts are more corrosion resistant in wet environments than zinc-plated steel nuts.

Low-Strength Steel Thin Hex Nuts

Also known as jam nuts, these are about half the height of standard hex nuts. Use them in low-clearance applications or jam one against another nut to hold it in place. About half the strength of medium-strength steel thin nuts, use them for light duty fastening applications, such as securing access panels.
Nuts with fine and extra-fine thread spacing are less likely to loosen from vibration than nuts with coarse thread spacing.

18-8 Stainless Steel Thin Hex Nuts

These nuts have good chemical resistance and may be mildly magnetic. Also known as jam nuts, they are about half the height of standard hex nuts. Use them in low-clearance applications or jam one against another nut to hold it in place.

Super-Corrosion-Resistant 316 Stainless Steel Thin Hex Nuts

These nuts have excellent chemical resistance and can be used in saltwater environments. Also known as jam nuts, they are about half the height of standard hex nuts. Use them in low-clearance applications or jam one against another nut to hold it in place.

316 Stainless Steel Thin Hex Nuts

With threads that tighten to the left and made of 316 stainless steel, these nuts won’t loosen from counterclockwise motion in saltwater and corrosive environments. They’re half the height of standard hex nuts, so they fit where there’s low clearance. Sometimes called jam nuts, you can also jam them against standard nuts to hold them in place when fastening machines and equipment.

Low-Strength Steel Thin Nylon-Insert Locknuts

These locknuts are about half the height of standard nylon-insert locknuts. Use them in light duty low-clearance applications or jam one against a hex nut to hold it in place. The nylon insert grips the bolt to resist loosening without damaging threads. They're reusable, but their holding power lessens with each use.
