Frame-Mounted Safety Switches

Also known as interlock switches, these ensure the safety of personnel by automatically shutting off power to machinery when an access door opens. Mount the switch to the door frame and mount a key to the door so that the key is inserted into the switch when the door is closed. When the door opens, the key is removed from the switch and the machine shuts down. They’re often used with machine guards for large robots.
All switches require an actuator key, but not all include one—check whether you need to pick out a separate actuator key. For some switch styles, you can also select the mounting orientation of the key. Flexible keys pivot at least 15°, making them easier to align with switches during installation.
Style A-G switches have positive-force, normally closed contacts that will open a circuit when the switch is actuated even if a spring fails or the contacts stick.
Style J switches have extra safety controls to prevent you from getting trapped next to running machinery. They actuate with the turn of a portable key. Bring the key when you enter an enclosure to ensure machinery won’t start while you’re inside, even if the door closes behind you. As an added fail-safe, a rear release button lets you cut power from inside of enclosures if needed. These switches have light-up indicators that show when they're properly installed and whether they're actuated.
IP67 rated switches protect against temporary submersion. NEMA 4 rated switches protect against washdowns. NEMA 6 rated switches protect against both temporary submersion and washdowns.

Hinge-Actuated Safety Switches

Replace the hinges on access doors or machine guards with these switches to keep your team safe from active machinery. Also known as interlock switches, they automatically shut off power to your machinery when the door or guard opens. They can be mounted on flat frames or aluminum T-slotted framing. These switches have positive-force, normally-closed contacts that will open a circuit when the switch is actuated, even if a spring fails or the contacts stick. They’re rated IP65 for protection from washdowns.

Access-Delay Frame-Mounted Safety Switches

Delay access to hazardous areas until conditions are safe; use these switches with machines that take time to stop after they are turned off. Mount the switch to the door frame and mount the key to the door so that the key is inserted into the switch when the door is closed. When the door is pulled, the key is held in place with 225 lbs. of force until the switch receives a signal from a time-delay relay, motion sensor, or position sensor (not included) that the machine’s motion has stopped. After the motion has stopped, the key can be removed from the switch, releasing the access door. They’re often used with machine guards. All have positive-force, normally-closed contacts that will open a circuit when the switch is actuated even if a spring fails or the contacts stick. They’re rated for protection from washdowns and temporary submersion.
Style A and B have a key entry on the top and side of the switch.
Style C has a key entry on two opposite sides of the switch.
Emergency override keys (sold separately) bypass the access delay feature.

RFID Safety Switches

The convenient, modern alternative to mechanical safety switches. These RFID switches are easier to install, fit a wider range of access points, and can mount horizontally. Since they don't need a traditional key to actuate, they work even if the switch and actuator are slightly misaligned. Also known as interlock switches, they shut off power to equipment as soon as you open the barrier, which disconnects the RFID signal. These switches are often used with small machines. Find them anywhere from a CNC machine’s window to a packaging machine’s service panel. Mount the switch on the frame and the actuator on the barrier. Rated IP67 and IP69K, these switches are protected against temporary submersion and high-pressure, high-temperature washdowns.
The number of safety outputs, also known as output signal switching devices (OSSDs), tells you how many machines you can control. Each output has a pair of signals that shut down a single machine—if one signal fails, the other takes over as a failsafe.
Switches with a magnetic latch help prevent a barrier from opening by accident, such as from light bumps and low vibrations. The magnet keeps the actuator and switch from separating.
Micro M12 cords (sold separately) connect switches to your system’s circuits.

Frame-Mounted RFID Safety Switches

Prevent accidental bumps or vibration from triggering these safety switches unnecessarily—a strong magnet maintains the RFID signal between the actuator and switch until it's intentionally opened. Also known as interlock switches, they automatically cut power when you open an access door, interrupting the signal, then restore power when the door is closed, and the switch and actuator meet. They're designed to mount on a frame and a door, gate, or window. Use them in many ways—from turning off a machine-operated saw when you open the protective window to powering down robotic arms when someone enters the partitioned area. The LED indicator shows that your switch is on and whether it’s actuated.
The number of safety outputs, also known as output signal switching devices (OSSDs), tells you how many machines you can control. Each output has a pair of signals that shut down a single machine—if one signal fails, the other takes over as a failsafe.
Switches with a unique RFID code are only compatible with their own actuator, so they’re difficult to tamper with.
IP67 rated switches protect against temporary submersion. IP69K rated switches protect against high-pressure, high-temperature washdowns.

Tamper-Resistant RFID Safety Switches

Block access to machinery while it's running. These safety switches cut power when their signal disconnects, shutting off equipment as you open machine guards. They link to a single actuator, so no other RFID tag or card can interfere. The unique RFID code means that once the power is cut, no one can bypass the switch and restart equipment while the guard is open.
These switches are often used with small machines where there’s no risk of the barrier closing on its own. Find them anywhere from a CNC machine’s window to a machine-operated saw’s service panel. Mount the switch on the frame and the actuator on the barrier. They're also known as interlock switches. Rated IP67 and IP69K, these switches are protected against temporary submersion and high-pressure, high-temperature washdowns.

Light Beam Safety Barrier Switches
Immediately cut power to machinery by breaking the light beam between the two barriers. Light beams can travel up to 32 feet between the transmitter and receiver. For a complete system, combine a transmitter, receiver, safety relay, and connectors (sold separately). Switches will automatically produce PNP or NPN signal output based on the device they are connected to. To selectively allow material to pass through the sensing field, you can program the system to allow one or more beams to be broken without shutting off your machine.
Note: These switches cannot be used with a full-revolution clutch press or machine. Use only with machinery that can consistently and immediately stop anywhere in its cycle.
Safety relays have a microprocessor that monitors safety components, such as emergency stops and light curtains, and sends a signal to stop the operation if a failure is detected and restart when the issue is resolved. They also help with diagnostic tasks because of their feedback circuit, which allows basic relays to communicate their status back to the safety relay. Any system that doesn’t have a safety control component will need a safety relay.
Transmitter and receiver connecting cords allow you to connect multiple safety barrier switches in a row. They include one cord to connect two transmitters, and one cord to connect two receivers.
Optional adjustable brackets allow the transmitter and receiver to swivel from side-to-side, making it easier to align them during installation.
IP67 rated components are protected from temporary submersion.

Control and diagnose issues with safety-critical circuits. These relays have a microprocessor that monitors safety components, such as emergency stops and light curtains, and sends a signal to stop the operation if a failure is detected and restart when the issue is resolved. They also help with diagnostic tasks because of their feedback circuit, which allows basic relays to communicate their status back to the safety relay. These relays have a duplicate set of input and output signals, so they’ll still stop the controlled device if one of the inputs fails.
IP20 rated, they have recessed terminals which prevent fingers and other objects from touching live circuits. These relays have been tested to multiple safety standards and can help achieve PL, SIL, or CAT system ratings. They also meet ISO and IEC standards for machine safety.
Mount them to 35 mm DIN rail (also known as DIN 3 Rail) for fast installation.
Relays and auxiliary contact blocks with delayed safety outputs are often used where power must be maintained after an input signal is received. For example, after a stop button for a machine is pressed, the guard door will stay locked until the machine cycle is finished.
Auxiliary contact blocks (sold separately) allow you to control more components, such as signaling devices or basic relays.

Safety Laser Scanners
Monitor a wide area around dangerous machinery. If a person or object gets too close, these scanners signal your relay or controller to either trigger a warning or shut down the machinery. For example, they can slow a robotic arm if someone comes within 20 ft., then stop it completely if they come within 10 ft. You can also set these scanners to respond only when they detect objects of a certain size. Since they continuously monitor 275°, they cover a much wider area than light beam safety barrier switches.
These scanners have a dedicated safety output for triggering emergency stops, and three inputs/outputs that you can configure. The safety output sends two duplicate signals at the same time—also called redundant signals—so even if one fails, the other will stop your equipment. Wire this output to safety relays or safety terminals on a controller. The inputs/outputs can be configured to set off warnings or adjust the scanner’s behavior. When used as outputs, they can send a signal to flash a light, sound an alarm, or slow a machine. When used as inputs, they can signal the scanner to ignore robot arms or other expected objects, while still scanning for people and unexpected objects.
Download free software onto a computer running Windows to set the monitoring distance, the size of the objects you want to detect, and the function of the inputs/outputs. You can also save up to six different configurations on the scanner itself.
Rated IP65, these switches are sealed to keep out dust and low-pressure jets of water. They’re UL and C-UL listed, CE marked, and TUV SUD certified, so they meet U.S. and international safety standards. They also meet EN, ISO, and IEC standards for performance and safety.
You’ll need a power/input/output cable to connect the scanner to your power supply, controller, or relay. Use an ethernet cord to connect the scanner to your computer for programming.
Mount these scanners to a flat surface using holes on the back. Add a mounting bracket to tilt the scanner toward the area you want to monitor. To shield the top of your scanner from falling objects and collisions, mount a protective bracket onto the mounting bracket.
