About Files
Files, also known as American-pattern and machinists' files, are used to remove material quickly.
Precision files, also known as Swiss-pattern files, are made to exacting measurements to ensure smoothness and are useful for finishing delicate and intricate parts.

Round Files

Good for filing holes and concave surfaces, these are also known as rat-tail files. Files do not include a handle but do have a tang that fits into a handle. Length does not include the tang.
Double Cut—Surface has two sets of diagonal teeth and is often used with heavier pressure than single cut for rapid material removal.
Single Cut—Surface has one set of diagonal teeth and is often used with light pressure to slowly remove material and sharpen tool-cutting surfaces.
Black-oxide finish resists rust and clogging.

Chain Saw Files

Get between teeth on chain saws to sharpen their cutting edges. The knurled teeth are similar to double cut, which have two sets of diagonal teeth on the surface. Also known as blunt round chain saw files. These files do not include a handle but do have a tang that fits into a handle. Length does not include the tang.
Round Rasps

Good for filing holes and concave surfaces, these rasps have sharp individual teeth that quickly remove large amounts of soft, clog-prone materials. They do not include a handle but do have a tang that fits into a handle. Length does not include the tang.
