Keyed Rotary Shafts

Mount components anywhere along the length of these shafts. For secure torque transmission, slide a component from either end and lock it into place with an ANSI machine key (sold separately).
Carbon Steel—Strong and easy to machine. These shafts work best in dry environments since moisture will cause steel to rust.
Corrosion-Resistant 304 Stainless Steel—Withstand moisture and mild cleaning solutions, such as acetone and ammonia. However, these shafts are more difficult to machine than carbon steel shafts.
Highly Corrosion-Resistant 316 Stainless Steel—More corrosion resistant than 303 and 304 stainless steel shafts. They stand up to salt water and harsh chemicals, such as bleach, chlorine, and phosphoric acid.

The high carbon content in this 440C stainless steel helps it withstand abrasion and wear better than any other stainless steel. Like tool steel, it can be heat treated to become extremely hard. It also maintains its corrosion resistance in temperatures up to 800° F. However, it’s more likely to break than bend from impacts. It’s often used to make bearings and valves.

Machinable 416 Stainless Steel Rods

A good choice for gears, screws, and shafts, it won't wear down when it grinds against other metal parts. It also maintains its corrosion resistance in temperatures as hot as 1200° F. However, it's not as corrosion resistant as other types of stainless steel, such as 304 and 17-4 PH.
