Keep a variety of router bits on hand to cut grooves, chamfers, and other detailed shapes into wood and plastic. Made of carbide-tipped high-speed steel, these bits provide a longer tool life and faster cutting speeds than standard high-speed steel bits.
Flush-Trimming Cut Style—Flush-trimming bits cut layers of material flush to one another or make cuts along a template.
Hinge-Mortise Cut Style—Hinge-mortise bits create large, shallow recesses.
Joining Cut Style—Joining bits create shapes that fit together in order to form joints.
Panel-Pilot Cut Style—Panel-pilot bits have a pointed tip that creates starter holes for efficient plunge cutting in wood. To make precise cutouts, use the top of the tip as a pilot and guide the bit along a template placed below the workpiece.

Carbide-tipped high-speed steel bits are for use on wood and laminate.
Bottom Pilot—Bottom-pilot bits trim material from an upper layer of the workpiece so that it is flush with the layer below. In addition to flush trimming, they can be used to cut along a template placed below the workpiece.
Top Pilot—Top-pilot bits cut a lower layer of the workpiece flush to the layer above. In addition to flush trimming, they can be used for pattern cutting with a template placed above the workpiece.
Plunge Cut—Bits with a plunge cut type let you cut directly into the workpiece from above. Other bits are best for operations where the peripheral teeth do most of the work such as trimming, contouring, and finishing.
Straight Flutes—Bits with straight flutes are for general purpose use. They quickly remove material, leaving a rough finish.
Ball Bearing—Ball-bearing pilots guide the bit for accurate cuts and produce less friction than solid pilots for smoother operation.
Pilot Location—Pilot location describes the position of the pilot when the bit is used for hand routing. The pilot location is reversed when using the bit with a router table.

Micrograin carbide bits provide superior wear resistance, long tool life, and a cleaner finish than bits made of other materials.
Use carbide bits for longer tool life and faster cutting speeds than high-speed steel.
Bottom Pilot—Bottom-pilot bits trim material from an upper layer of the workpiece so that it is flush with the layer below. In addition to flush trimming, they can be used to cut along a template placed below the workpiece.
Straight Flutes—Bits with straight flutes are for general purpose use. They quickly remove material, leaving a rough finish.
Ball Bearing—Ball-bearing pilots guide the bit for accurate cuts and produce less friction than solid pilots for smoother operation.
1 Flute—Choose a bit with one flute for a faster cut; bits with more flutes produce a smoother finish.
Overhang Cutoff Edge—Bits with an overhang cutoff edge remove most of the excess material from the edge of workpieces such as countertops and sink cutouts, but they leave some material leftover for precise trimming after the installation. This process minimizes the risk of chipping laminate during installation and produces a clean, professional finish.
Pilot Location—Pilot location describes the position of the pilot when the bit is used for hand routing. The pilot location is reversed when using the bit with a router table.

Straight and Spiral Router Bits for Aluminum

Also known as O-flute bits, the flutes on these bits are open and rounded for efficient chip removal when cutting aluminum. This also reduces heat to prevent melting or warping. Use these bits to create square slots, pockets, and edges. They are plunge cutting, letting you cut directly into the workpiece from above. They do not have a pilot, so guide your router along a straight edge when hand routing to make accurate cuts.

Straight and Spiral Router Bits for Foam

The cutting edges of these bits have a shallow angle to carve foam quickly and accurately. With a square cut style, they create slots, pockets, and edges. These bits are good for plunge cutting, letting you cut directly into the workpiece from above. They do not have a pilot, so guide your router along a straight edge when hand routing to make accurate cuts.

Use carbide bits for longer tool life and faster cutting speeds than high-speed steel. Their extreme hardness means they are brittle, so a highly rigid setup, such as a CNC machine, is necessary to prevent the bit from breaking.
Spiral Flute—Bits with spiral flutes leave a smoother finish than V-flute bits and make plunge cuts more easily.
Upward Chip Removal—Bits with upward chip removal lift chips up for applications that require a smooth finish on the bottom edge of the cut. Securely clamp the workpiece before routing to prevent lifting.

For smooth contour carving in wood, plastic, and aluminum, these bits have a ball-nose design. All are made of solid carbide for a long tool life and fast cutting speeds. The extreme hardness of carbide bits means they are brittle, so they're not recommended for use with hand tools. A highly rigid setup, such as a CNC machine, is necessary to prevent the bit from breaking. The spiral flutes pull chips up from the workpiece while making cuts; securely clamp your material before routing to prevent lifting.

Square Cut Style—Use bits with a square cut style to cut slots, pockets, and edges.
Drill/Mill Cut Style—Bits with a drill/mill cut style have a pointed end for easier plunge cuts than bits with a square cut style.
Plunge Cut—Plunge-cutting bits let you cut directly into the workpiece from above. Other bits are best for operations where the peripheral teeth do most of the work, such as trimming, contouring, and finishing.
60° Compression Angle—The unique cutting angle and sharp edges slice through difficult material such as aramid. Often used in the aerospace industry to cut wings, rudders, and other structural components. They have upward and downward chip removal—acting similar to scissors, they move chips away from the top and bottom edges of the cut for a smooth finish on both.
Diamond-Pattern Flutes—Diamond-pattern flutes' small, staggered teeth aggressively cut, yet leave a smooth finish.
Trapezoid Pattern Flutes—Trapezoid-pattern flutes are like diamond-pattern flutes, but with overlapping cutting edges for an even smoother cut.

Spiral Router Bits for Steel and Stainless Steel

The aluminum-titanium-nitride (AlTiN) coating on these bits resists heat and wear when cutting steel and stainless steel. They have a square cut style for creating slots, pockets, and edges. They're made of solid carbide for longer tool life and faster cutting speeds than high-speed steel. Their extreme hardness means they are brittle, so a highly rigid setup, such as a CNC machine, is necessary to prevent the bit from breaking. With spiral flutes, they leave a smoother finish than straight-flute bits and are good for making plunge cuts. The flutes lift chips up from the workpiece for applications that require a smooth finish on the bottom edge of the cut. Securely clamp your material before routing to prevent lifting. Bits with more flutes produce a smoother finish.

    Diamond-Coated Router Bits for Composites

With a diamond coating, these bits resist wear when used on abrasive materials, making them last about 50 times longer than uncoated bits. Their sharp cutting edges and flute shapes are specifically designed to cut through tough materials such as composites with minimal resistance. This means less strain on your router and more control when cutting, leading to a smooth cut. Bits are made of solid carbide for longer tool life and faster cutting speeds than high-speed steel.

Spiral Flute—Bits with spiral flutes leave a smoother finish than straight-flute bits and make plunge cuts more easily (for plunge-cutting bits).
Roughed Spiral Flute—Nicks on the edges of the spirals reduce the amount of force required to cut through composites, giving you more control as you cut.
Diamond-Pattern Flutes—Diamond-pattern flutes' small, staggered teeth aggressively cut, yet leave a smooth finish.
Herringbone Compression Flute—Herringbone-compression flutes have both upward and downward spiral flutes in an alternating pattern. This quickly and effectively clears chips, which prevents overheating and produces clean cuts.
Upward Chip Removal—Bits with upward chip removal lift chips up for applications that require a smooth finish on the bottom edge of the cut. Securely clamp the workpiece before routing to prevent lifting.
Upward and Downward Chip Removal—Bits with upward and downward chip removal are also known as compression bits. Acting similar to scissors, they move chips away from the top and bottom edges of the cut for a smooth finish on both. Bits with higher compression angles cut more efficiently than bits with lower compression angles, reducing the amount of force required to cut through your material. They are also more resistant to wear.
