    Machinable 416 Stainless Steel Rods

    Drill, mill, and turn at high speeds without clogging your cutting tools. Alloyed with sulfur, 416 is the easiest type of stainless steel to machine. A good choice for gears, screws, and shafts, it won't wear down when it grinds against other metal parts. It also maintains its corrosion resistance in temperatures as hot as 1200° F. However, it's not as corrosion resistant as other types of stainless steel, such as 304 and 17-4 PH.

    Machinable 416 Stainless Steel Hex Bars

Made to ASTM A484 specifications to fit standard hex sockets and tools, these bars make parts that are easy to grab and tighten. They will also hold their shape after repeated tightening and loosening.
    Alloyed with more sulfur than 303, 416 stainless steel breaks cleanly into chips as you work, so it won’t clog your cutting tools. Its surface doesn’t harden, even after multiple passes. It maintains its corrosion resistance in temperatures as hot as 1200° F. However, it’s not as corrosion resistant as other types of stainless steel, such as 304 and 17-4 PH.

Machine keys are often the same material as the shaft and other components with which they are used. To use a key as a sacrificial part, choose a softer key that will shear off when parts are exposed to excessive force, preventing damage to expensive equipment.

    416 stainless steel key stock is stronger than other stainless key stock and can be heat treated for extra strength. It's corrosion resistant and magnetic. 416 stainless steel key stock is more corrosion resistant than steel key stock.
    Oversized Tolerance—Slightly larger than the size listed in the table, oversized stock fits tightly in a keyway. Press it into place for use in high-torque applications or to replace a key in a worn keyway.
    Undersized Tolerance—Slightly smaller than the size listed in the table, undersized stock is the choice when you need a slightly looser fit or when you have an inconsistent keyway. Use it when parts need to be taken apart frequently, such as for maintenance or prototyping.
