    Style A

    Style B

    Style C

    No groove needed—these rings grip the shaft on their own. They won't handle as much force as rings in grooves, however, so only use them with light loads. For one-time use only. Push onto the end of the shaft, or use a push nut installation tool. Use on unhardened shafts softer than the ring.
    Style A—Our go-to push-on rings. The outer ring is curved and the teeth are individually stamped, which gives the rings higher holding power than other push-on rings. Commonly used in drills and steering wheels.
    Style B—The teeth on these rings point upward and are slightly flexible, which accommodates a larger range of shaft and rod diameters, but reduces holding power. They are easier to install than Style A rings and commonly used to secure emblems and wheels in light-load applications.
    Style C—These rings form an interference grip by having a smaller ID than the shaft or rod OD. Their low profile fits in spots with tight clearance. Commonly used on conveyor roller systems and small electronics.
    Phosphate-Coated Carbon Steel and Black-Oxide Carbon Steel—The most popular choice, these are strong and wear resistant. Their finish adds some corrosion resistance, but only to minimal dampness.
    Zinc-Yellow-Chromate-Plated Carbon Steel and Zinc-Plated Carbon Steel—These rings are strong with good wear resistance. They provide some corrosion resistance, but not as much as stainless steel rings.
    18-8 Stainless Steel—The choice for wet and outdoor environments. These rings resist rust, but they aren't as strong as carbon steel.
    15-7 PH Stainless Steel—Combine strength with corrosion resistance. While harder than most stainless steel rings, these will dent and scratch easier than carbon steel ones.

    Self-Locking External Retaining Rings

    No groove needed. These rings are up to 50% thicker than standard rings to grip shafts on their own. They can't handle as much force as rings in grooves, however, so use them in applications with lighter loads. Open with retaining ring pliers, pass over the end of a shaft, then release them to spring into a groove.
    Ring ID is measured with the ring uninstalled.
    Phosphate-Coated Carbon Steel—The most popular choice, these are strong and wear resistant. Their finish adds some corrosion resistance, but only to minimal dampness.
