Also known as inductive proximity switches, these detect metallic objects even if they’re obscured by water, oil, dirt, or a surface finish. Sensing distance is based on the target material. The distance listed is for mild steel. They’re often used with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and produce PNP or NPN signal output. Flush switches, also known as embeddable or shielded switches, can be mounted so that the sensor face is level with the surface of any material, including metal. They’re more accurate than projecting switches at close range and can be mounted close together without causing interference.

IP67 and IP68 rated switches are protected from temporary submersion. NEMA 6P rated switches are protected from corrosion and washdowns.
