Choosing a Proximity Switch

DC Metallic-Object Proximity Switches

Also known as inductive proximity switches, these detect metallic objects even if they’re obscured by water, oil, dirt, or a surface finish. Sensing distance is based on the target material. The distance listed is for mild steel. They’re often used with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and produce PNP or NPN signal output. To determine the signal output of a switch you are replacing, use Testers for Proximity and Photoelectric Switches (not included).
Flush switches, also known as embeddable or shielded switches, can be mounted so that the sensor face is level with the surface of any material, including metal. They’re more accurate than projecting switches at close range and can be mounted close together without causing interference. IP67 and IP68 rated switches are protected from temporary submersion.

DC Metallic-Object Proximity Switches for Long Distances

Sense objects from farther away than with other proximity switches that have the same diameter. Also known as inductive proximity switches, they remotely sense metallic objects even if they’re obscured by water, oil, dirt, or a surface finish. Sensing distance is based on the type of material being sensed. The distance listed is for mild steel. They’re often used with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and produce PNP signal output. Some automatically sense whether PNP or NPN signal output is needed.
Flush switches, also known as embeddable or shielded switches, can be mounted so that the sensor face is level with the surface of any material, including metal. They’re more accurate than projecting switches at close range and can be mounted close together without causing interference.
All are rated IP69K for protection from high-temperature, high-pressure washdowns. Some are also rated NEMA 6P, 13, and IP67 for protection from corrosion, oil/coolant spraying, and temporary submersion.
