Choosing a Proximity Switch

With Screw Terminals

A built-in relay produces AC voltage output. These switches are often used with older programmable logic controllers (PLCs). They detect the presence or absence of an object moving at high speeds with a light beam.

Time-Delay Photoelectric Switches with Relay Output

Set these switches to delay activation by up to five seconds after detecting an object. A built-in relay produces AC voltage output. They’re often used with older programmable logic controllers (PLCs). They detect the presence or absence of an object moving at high speeds with a light beam. All are rated IP66 for protection against washdowns.

Photoelectric Switches

Detect the presence or absence of an object moving at high speeds with a light beam. These switches have a longer sensing distance than proximity and ultrasonic switches.

Reflector switches detect an object when it passes between the switch and the reflector, interrupting the beam. They have a shorter sensing distance than receiver switches but are quicker to wire. They have a longer sensing distance than direct-sensing switches.

Adjustable switches can increase the intensity of the light beam to better detect shiny or translucent objects. Switches with an ultraviolet light beam are good for detecting clear materials like plastic or glass, which absorb more UV light than infrared or visible light.

Switches with DC input voltage produce PNP or NPN signal output. To determine which signal output to choose, use Testers for Proximity and Photoelectric Switches (not included).

90° angle switches mount flat against equipment, so they’ll fit in corners and other tight spots. They’re often used on conveyors to detect material passing by.

Switches with a plug connect to cables with a socket (sold separately), allowing you to quickly connect and disconnect the switch.

Switches with IO Link can be configured remotely when connected to a programmable logic controller (PLC), a human machine interface (HMI), or a computer. They let you remotely change settings, read measurements, and receive error messages.

Precision Photoelectric Switches

Detect objects as thin as a freshly sharpened pencil tip. These switches are best for tight spaces because they have a smaller light beam and can detect smaller objects than standard photoelectric switches. They produce PNP or NPN signal output. To determine the signal output of a switch you are replacing, use Testers for Proximity and Photoelectric Switches (not included). All are rated IP67 for protection from dust and temporary submersion. Some also meet NEMA 6 for protection from washdowns.

Adjustable switches can increase the intensity of the light beam to better detect shiny or translucent objects.

Switches with PNP/NPN signal output automatically produce the type of signal output that is needed based on the device they are connected to.

Wide Beam Photoelectric Switches

Detect irregularly shaped items with a band of light up to 10 times larger than the beam on a standard photoelectric switch. The wide beam makes them a great choice when material moving down your line varies in size and shape. Because they’re photoelectric, they don’t make contact with items like other actuators do, and they can detect objects that are moving quickly. They produce PNP or NPN signal output. Hazardous Location Photoelectric Switches

Safely detect the presence or absence of an object moving at high speeds with a light beam. These switches produce a low-current, low-voltage NAMUR signal, so they won’t create sparks or ignite in hazardous locations. ATEX and IECEx certified, they meet international standards to protect against explosion in environments containing flammable gases and combustible dust. Switches must be connected to the required barriers (sold separately), which reduce the current and voltage flowing from your power source. Unlike the switches, the barriers must be installed in a separate nonhazardous area.

These switches can send a signal to programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to support automated processes within your system. Reflector Switch with

A slim design and a light beam that’s angled upwards allow these switches to sense objects from between conveyor rollers. Because they’re photoelectric, they can detect objects that are moving quickly. All are adjustable, so you can increase the intensity of the light beam to sense shiny or translucent objects. These switches have an M12 connection to quickly connect and disconnect from your switch. Add cables (sold separately) to switches with a plug to wire them into your setup.

Crane Safety Switches

Prevent collisions while moving heavy loads with overhead bridge crane systems. These switches signal a crane to stop or slow when they detect that another crane or wall is too close. Mount the switch on your crane and the included reflector on the obstacle you want to avoid. The switch will bounce a light beam off the reflector to measure how far away it is—if it’s within the distance you’ve set, the switch triggers. These switches are also useful if you want to make sure a crane doesn’t move past a certain point. Turn the dials on the top to control the trigger distance and whether your crane stops or slows down. These switches can communicate with any crane that uses a variable frequency drive (VFD), soft starters, or contactor controls.

Mount the adhesive-backed reflector so the switch's light beam hits its center. Built to avoid signal interference from other switches, also known as crosstalk, these switches can be used next to each other without a problem. They use polarized light, so they filter out unwanted light beams and their beam stays focused on their reflector.

Rated IP67, these switches seal out dust and water, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.
