Choosing a Proximity Switch

Wide Beam Photoelectric Switches
Detect irregularly shaped items with a band of light up to 10 times larger than the beam on a standard photoelectric switch. The wide beam makes them a great choice when material moving down your line varies in size and shape. Because they’re photoelectric, they don’t make contact with items like other actuators do, and they can detect objects that are moving quickly. They produce PNP or NPN signal output. To determine the signal output of a switch you are replacing, use Testers for Proximity and Photoelectric Switches (not included).
Reflector switches detect an object when it passes between the switch and the reflector, interrupting the beam. They have a longer sensing distance than direct-sensing switches. They're often used in fulfillment since their wide beam detects packages thin and thick as they travel down your line. All are rated IP67 for protection from temporary submersion.

Roller-Conveyor-Mount Photoelectric Switches

Solenoid Valve
and Cable Lead

A slim design and a light beam that’s angled upwards allow these switches to sense objects from between conveyor rollers. Because they’re photoelectric, they can detect objects that are moving quickly. All are adjustable, so you can increase the intensity of the light beam to sense shiny or translucent objects. These switches have an M12 connection to quickly connect and disconnect from your switch. Add cables (sold separately) to switches with a plug to wire them into your setup.
Switches with an NFC connection can be programmed and calibrated through a free app on your smartphone. This way, you can leave the switch installed while calibrating it.
Direct sensing switches project light onto an object and then detect the reflection to actuate. The transmitter and receiver are in the same housing, so these switches fit in tight spaces. They require a quick-clip mounting bracket (sold separately).
Reflector switches detect an object when it passes between the switch and the reflector, interrupting the beam. They have a longer sensing distance than direct-sensing switches. They can be mounted with an L-shaped mounting bracket (sold separately).
IP65 switches protect against dust and splashing water. IP67 switches protect against dust and temporary submersion.
Switches with a solenoid valve allow you to control air-powered conveyor drives directly from the switch.
Switches with a conveyor on/off switch allow you to control when conveyors start and stop—no need for a separate controller.

Sanitary Photoelectric Switches
Maintain sanitary standards—these switches have smooth surfaces without crevices, so they prevent bacteria from building up and are easy to clean. You’ll find them in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical applications. Made of stainless steel, they won’t corrode from frequent cleanings. All are IP68 and IP69K rated for protection against temporary submersion and high-pressure, high-temperature washdowns. Because they’re photoelectric, they don’t make contact with items like other actuators do. Instead, they use light to detect objects that are moving quickly. These switches have a plug, which connects to cables with a socket (sold separately), so you can quickly connect and disconnect the switch. Install them with brackets, clamps, extension tubes, or mounting adapters (all sold separately).
Direct-sensing switches project light onto an object and then detect the reflection to actuate. The transmitter and receiver are in the same housing, so these switches fit in tight spaces.
Receiver switches detect an object when it passes between the switch and the included reflector, interrupting the beam. They have a longer sensing distance than direct-sensing switches.

Brackets mount the switch to a panel vertically without a gap or exposed threads. They have an O-ring made of fluoroelastomer rubber that creates a seal with the panel to maintain sanitary ratings and withstand washdowns.

Leveling brackets mount the switch to a panel when the panel is at an angle. They permit up to 10 degrees of angle compensation using an FDA-approved PTFE ball joint. An O-ring made of fluoroelastomer rubber creates a seal with the panel to maintain sanitary ratings and withstand washdowns.

Clamps fix switches or mounting tubes to surfaces without a panel cutout. They come with hygienic screws.

Extension tubes position the switch further from the panel. They can also be used to cover cable and connectors behind the panel. They fit inside the mounting brackets. Those with a height of 119 mm have a threaded cable gland which matches the size of the switch cable sealing the system. This helps maintain the sanitary ratings and withstands washdowns.

Mounting adapters help you create your own mounting tube. You can glue, press fit, or weld them. They have the same connection as the switches and mounting tubes.
