    Shims

Image of Product. Front orientation. Shims. Round, Sold Individually.
With thickness tolerances as fine as a strand of hair, these shims precisely align, space, and level components on shafts, arbors, and machinery.
You can stack multiple shims to achieve your exact thickness, but stacking more than four may cause them to shift. Remember, fewer shims are better, so a couple of thicker shims are more stable than a bunch of thin shims.
18-8 Stainless Steel—The choice for wet and outdoor environments, these shims resist rust. However, they’ll corrode or pit when exposed to salt water and chemicals.
Super-Corrosion-Resistant 316 Stainless Steel—Superior to 18-8 stainless steel, these shims won't degrade when exposed to harsh weather, salt water, and most chemicals.
Aluminum—These shims are an alternative to stainless steel for rust resistance but aren't as hard so they may not retain their shape as well. One-third the weight of steel, they’re commonly used in robotics and automation.
Brass—With a warm, polished look, these shims are often chosen for their appearance. Similar to 18-8 stainless steel, brass is corrosion resistant enough to stand up to wet environments.
Copper—Good conductors of heat, these shims are often used when installing heat sinks. As our softest metal shims, they prevent damage to equipment and components but may not retain their shape as well as other metal shims.

Image of Product. Front orientation. Shims. Sold Individually, Shoulder Shortening, Round.
Pare down the shoulder on shoulder screws. Slide these shims under the screw head to create the length you need. Use them to tighten the hold on bearings, pulleys, and sprockets, or shorten the length of travel along the shoulder.
You can stack multiple shims to achieve the exact shoulder length or space you need.
18-8 Stainless Steel—The choice for wet and outdoor environments, these shims resist rust. However, they’ll corrode or pit when exposed to salt water and chemicals.

    Shims for Lengthening Screw Shoulders

Image of ProductInUse. Front orientation. Contains Annotated. Shims. Round, Sold Individually, Shoulder Lengthening.
Image of Product. Front orientation. Shims. Round, Sold Individually, Shoulder Lengthening.
When shoulders come up short, use these shims to extend the shoulder length on your screw. Wiggle the shims over the threads and up to the existing shoulder to create the exact shoulder length you need. Use them to create more space for bearings, pulleys, and sprockets, or extend the length of travel along the shoulder.
You can stack multiple shims to achieve the exact shoulder length or space you need.
18-8 Stainless Steel—The choice for wet and outdoor environments, these shims resist rust. However, they’ll corrode or pit when exposed to salt water and chemicals.
Super-Corrosion-Resistant 316 Stainless Steel—Superior to 18-8 stainless steel, these shims won't degrade when exposed to harsh weather, salt water, and most chemicals.

    Peel-Away Multilayer Made-to-Order Shims

Image of Product. Front orientation. Shims. Multilayer, Sold Individually, Made-to-Order, Peel Away.
If you need a unique peel-away shim shape or size, we’ll precision cut it for you. Use these shims to fine-tune thickness without worrying about stacking multiple shims. They're made of metal layers bonded with adhesive—peel off the layers with a utility knife until you reach your desired thickness. To make peeling easier, warm the shims to soften the adhesive. With thickness tolerances as fine as a strand of hair, all of these shims precisely align, space, and level components on shafts, arbors, and machinery.
Send your dimensioned DWG, DXF, IGES, or STEP file to sales@mcmaster.com. Please leave at least 1/8" wall between shim edge and holes. Minimum hole size is 1/4". Shims should be no smaller than 1" × 1" square or 1" OD. Maximum shim dimension is the largest overall length, width, or diameter of your custom shim.
18-8 Stainless Steel—The choice for wet and outdoor environments, these shims resist rust. However, they’ll corrode or pit when exposed to salt water and chemicals.
Carbon Steel—Best for dry environments since moisture will cause these shims to rust.
Material Certificate—Shims include a report with a traceable lot number.

    Shim Stock

Image of Product. Front orientation. Shim Stock. Sold Individually.
Cut into custom shapes to create shims that suit your needs. With thickness tolerances as fine as a strand of hair, the shims will precisely align, space, and level components on dies, presses, and machinery.
You can stack multiple shims to achieve your exact thickness, but stacking more than four may cause them to shift. Remember, fewer shims are better, so a couple of thicker shims are more stable than a bunch of thin shims.
Sheets—Shim stock comes in sheets that are flat packed.
Stress-Resistant Spring Steel—Harder and holds its shape better than carbon steel. Use it for high-stress applications, such as leveling heavy machinery. It's best for dry areas since moisture will cause it to rust.
Bronze—The choice for marine environments, it won't rust or deteriorate from exposure to salt water. It offers better corrosion resistance than 316 stainless steel but isn't as strong.
Temper Rating—Choose half hard to create shims that you’ll need to bend or shape. Opt for full hard to make stronger shims that will maintain their shape under loads.

    Wave Spring Lock Washers

Image of Product. Front orientation. Lock Washers. Wave Washer, Spring Lock Washer.
The wavy shape flexes like a spring to keep nuts and screws secure on slightly uneven surfaces. These washers add a small amount of tension to stop fasteners from backing out due to mild vibration. While they don't hold as well as other lock washers, they do grip slightly better than curved washers. They work best in electrical panels, light fixtures, and other light duty assemblies. Since these washers hold their shape when untightened, you can reuse them a handful of times without losing strength.
18-8 Stainless Steel—The choice for wet and outdoor environments, these washers won't rust when exposed to moisture. However, they can't hold up to the harsh chemicals that 316 stainless steel can.
3 Wave—More points of contact than single-wave washers for a better grip.

    Insulating Sleeve Washers

Cover screw threads to stop electrical current in its tracks and prevent short circuits. These washers create a barrier between the screw threads and the mating surface when mounted in through holes. This barrier also extends the life of your assembly by preventing galvanic corrosion, which is when two different metals rust more quickly due to contact with each other.
    Flat Edge
Image of Product. Front orientation. Insulating Washers. Insulating Sleeve Washers, Flat Edge.
The flat edge distributes weight evenly to take pressure off screw heads.
Nylon—Our most versatile insulating washers, these block unwanted current in everything from switches and circuit breakers to control panels and electric motors.
