Easy-To-Machine 173 Beryllium Copper Rods
- Yield Strength: 50,000 psi
- Hardness: Rockwell B80 (Medium)
- Temper: TD04 (Hard)
- Heat Treatable: Yes
- Specifications Met: ASTM B196
With the addition of lead, this beryllium copper alloy forms small chips that won’t clog machines when it’s drilled or cut, so it is ideal for automated production lines. Adding beryllium to a copper base makes a normally soft copper strong and rigid. This alloy is also nonsparking and nonmagnetic. It is often used in hazardous areas such as mines and oil rigs, as well as in navigational tools, computers, and high-wear molds. Even with these other elements mixed in, this alloy still allows electric currents to pass, just like copper, but without deforming thanks to that added strength. It resists corrosion in marine environments, however it may form a green patina when exposed to oxygen and oxides.

Linear Motion Shafts
Smooth, hard, and wear resistant, these shafts work with linear bearings to reduce friction in manual and automated systems, such as those found in packing, machine tool, and material handling operations. All are turned, ground, and polished to tight diameter and straightness tolerances.
Stainless steel shafts are more corrosion resistant than steel shafts; however, they’re not as hard as steel shafts and can be more difficult to machine. 17-4 PH stainless steel shafts are more corrosion resistant than 400 series stainless steel shafts, but they’re not as hard or as wear resistant.
Surface smoothness—The lower the microinch value, the smoother the finish and the less friction and wear it will cause on the bearing.

Rotary Shafts
Combine these general purpose drive shafts with gears, sprockets, and bearings to transmit rotary motion. All are turned, precision ground, and polished to meet tight diameter and straightness tolerances. This means these shafts evenly distribute loads, reduce vibration, and improve accuracy and stability.
Stainless steel shafts are more corrosion resistant than steel shafts but more difficult to machine. 316 stainless steel shafts are the most corrosion resistant stainless steel shaft.
Shafts with chamfered edges reduce damage to bearings, housings, and other components during installation.

Dowel Pins
Use dowel pins as pivots, hinges, shafts, jigs, and fixtures to locate or hold parts. For a tight fit, your hole should be equal to or slightly smaller than the diameter shown. Breaking strength is measured as double shear, which is the force required to break a pin into three pieces.
Steel pins are the strongest dowel pins. Steel pins are precision ground except for 1/32" diameter pins. Stainless steel pins are more corrosion resistant than steel pins. Pins that are passivated offer added protection against corrosion and oxidation. Stainless steel pins are precision ground except for 1/64" diameter pins. 18-8 stainless steel pins offer a balance of strength and corrosion resistance. They may be mildly magnetic. 316 stainless steel pins have the best corrosion resistance of our stainless steel pins. They may be mildly magnetic. 416 stainless steel pins are more wear resistant than other stainless pins, but not as corrosion resistant. They are magnetic.
