    Shim Stock

    Cut into custom shapes to create shims that suit your needs. With thickness tolerances as fine as a strand of hair, the shims will precisely align, space, and level components on dies, presses, and machinery.
    You can stack multiple shims to achieve your exact thickness, but stacking more than four may cause them to shift. Remember, fewer shims are better, so a couple of thicker shims are more stable than a bunch of thin shims.
    18-8 Stainless Steel—The choice for wet and outdoor areas because it resists rust. However, it will corrode or pit when exposed to salt water and chemicals.
    Super-Corrosion-Resistant 316 Stainless Steel—Superior to 18-8 stainless steel, it won't degrade when exposed to harsh weather, salt water, and most chemicals.
    High-Strength 17-7 PH Stainless Steel—Similar in strength to steel, it won’t rust in wet and outdoor areas but can’t withstand harsh chemicals like 316 stainless steel.
    Extreme-Strength 17-4 PH Stainless Steel—Stronger than 17-7 PH stainless steel, it won’t rust in wet and outdoor areas but can’t withstand harsh chemicals like 316 stainless steel.
    Carbon Steel—Best for dry areas since moisture will cause it to rust.
    Stress-Resistant Spring Steel—Harder and holds its shape better than carbon steel. Use it for high-stress applications, such as leveling heavy machinery. It's best for dry areas since moisture will cause it to rust.
    Aluminum—An alternative to stainless steel for rust resistance but less hard so it may not retain its shape. One-third the weight of steel, it's often used in robotics and automation.
    Brass—Picked for its warm, polished look. Similar to 18-8 stainless steel, it resists rusting in wet and outdoor areas.
    Copper—A good conductor of heat, it’s often used to install heat sinks. As our softest metal, it prevents component damage but may not retain its shape as well as other metals.
    Titanium—Grade 2 titanium, 99% pure, is often used in chemical-processing plants for its resistance to strong acids and other harsh chemicals. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio.
    Ultra-Chemical-Resistant PTFE—The most chemical-resistant shim stock we offer, it stands up to the widest range of harsh acids, bases, solvents, and corrosive cleaners, even at temperatures up to 500° F. It also won't mar delicate surfaces.
    Temper Rating—Choose half hard to create shims that you’ll need to bend or shape. Opt for full hard to make stronger shims that will maintain their shape under loads.

    You can stack multiple shims to achieve your exact thickness, but stacking more than four may cause them to shift. Remember, fewer shims are better, so a couple of thicker shims are more stable than a bunch of thin shims.
    Send your dimensioned DWG, DXF, IGES, or STEP file to sales@mcmaster.com. Please leave at least 1/8" wall between shim edge and holes. Minimum hole size is 1/8". Shims should be no smaller than 1" × 1" square or 1" OD. Maximum shim dimension is the largest overall length, width, or diameter of your custom shim.

    Peel-Away Multilayer Shim Stock

    Fine-tune thickness without worrying about stacking multiple shims. Cut the shim stock into custom shapes that suit your needs. It's made of layers of material bonded with adhesive—peel off the layers with a utility knife until you reach your desired thickness. To make peeling easier, warm the created shims to soften the adhesive. With thickness tolerances as fine as a strand of hair, the shims will precisely align, space, and level components on dies, presses, and machinery.
    Carbon Steel—Best for dry areas since moisture will cause it to rust.
    Aluminum—An alternative to stainless steel for rust resistance but less hard so it may not retain its shape. One-third the weight of steel, it's often used in robotics and automation.

    Shims for Keyed Shafts

    With a notch or tab, these shims fit snugly on keyed shafts to align and space gears, sprockets, and bearings. On keyed arbors, they’re often used to accurately space saw blades and cutters.
    You can stack multiple shims to achieve your exact thickness, but stacking more than four may cause them to shift. Remember, fewer shims are better, so a couple of thicker shims are more stable than a bunch of thin shims.
