Split Lock Washers
As a screw is tightened, these washers flatten to add tension to the joint, counteracting fatigue around the joint from small amounts of vibration. This makes them a common choice to prevent fasteners from loosening. However, they resist the least amount of vibration compared to other locking washers.
These washers are compatible with fasteners that have right-hand threads to prevent clockwise rotation. The uneven split ends bite into fasteners for a tight grip, but they won’t work with hardened surfaces. These washers hold better than curved or wave washers. They are not reusable after tightening.
Black-oxide steel washers are mildly corrosion resistant in dry environments.
316 stainless steel washers have excellent resistance to chemicals and salt water. They may be mildly magnetic.
18-8 stainless steel washers have good chemical resistance and may be mildly magnetic.
Zinc- and zinc yellow-chromate plated steel washers are corrosion resistant in wet environments.
Hot-dipped galvanized steel washers are 10 times as corrosion resistant as zinc- and zinc yellow-chromate plated washers.
Zinc-flake-coated steel washers are 40 times as corrosion resistant as zinc-plated washers and comparable to Magni-coated washers.
Washers that meet ASME B18.21.1 adhere to strict dimensional standards. Steel washers also meet standards for material properties.

Mil. Spec. Split Lock Washers
Choose these washers for their adherence to strict military standards for material and construction. As a screw is tightened, they flatten to add tension to the joint and prevent loosening from small amounts of vibration.
18-8 stainless steel washers have excellent corrosion resistance in most environments. They may be mildly magnetic.
Passivated stainless steel washers have added protection against oxidation and corrosion. Cadmium- and zinc yellow-chromate plated steel washers are corrosion resistant in wet environments.

Leveling Washers for I-Beams
Commonly called beveled washers, these are tapered to fit inside an I-beam's flange to provide a parallel bearing surface.
18-8 stainless steel washers have good chemical resistance and may be mildly magnetic.
