Shield circuit boards from flux, solder, conformal coatings, and high temperatures. Heat resistant up to 640° F, these temporary coatings are most often used to protect open through-holes and components during wave soldering. Coatings can also act as a short-term adhesive to keep parts in place when you’re soldering a two-sided SMT circuit board. An alternative to masking tapes that require cutting to shape, these gel coatings flow easily into small spaces and don’t leave a residue when removed. They’re also known as solder masks. Choose wash-away coatings if you use a water-based cleaning process such as a batch or in-line cleaning system. Wash-away coatings with a one-hr. overall dry time are nonflammable. They’re not completely water soluble, so they can’t be used in closed-loop cleaning systems. Coatings with a two-hr. overall dry time are completely water soluble for use in closed-loop cleaning systems. They’re slightly flammable.

Choose peel-away coatings if you use a solvent-based cleaning process or don’t clean your circuit boards. Coatings with a 15-min. overall dry time cure more evenly than peel-away coatings with a one-hr. overall dry time, so they can be applied in thick layers. They’re also nonflammable. Peel-away coatings with a one-hr. overall dry time produce low odors because they don’t contain ammonia.

Use these convenient cut shapes to mask holes, fastener heads, and small areas while soldering. This polyimide tape dissipates heat and is an excellent electrical insulator.
