Chrome-Plated Hardened Multipurpose 4140 Alloy Steel Rods

Rotary Shafts
Combine these general purpose drive shafts with gears, sprockets, and bearings to transmit rotary motion. All are precision ground to meet tight diameter and straightness tolerances.
Steel shafts are generally stronger than stainless steel shafts but not as corrosion resistant. Chrome-plated 1045 carbon steel shafts have a 0.0001"-0.0005" thick layer of chrome plating on the outside of the shaft that provides wear resistance and some corrosion resistance.

Linear Motion Shafts
Smooth, hard, and wear resistant, linear motion shafts work with linear bearings to reduce friction in manual and automated systems, such as those found in packing, machine tool, and material handling operations. The smooth surface reduces friction and wear on the bearing—the lower the microinch value a shaft has, the smoother its finish and the less friction it will create. All are turned, ground, and polished to tight diameter and straightness tolerances.
Steel shafts are generally stronger than aluminum and stainless steel shafts but not as corrosion resistant. Chrome-plated 1566 carbon steel shafts have a 0.00005" layer of chrome plating on the outside of the shaft that reduces wear and improves corrosion resistance. Shafts with chamfered edges have their edges ground to reduce damage to bearings, housings, and other components during installation.
Case-hardened shafts are hardened only on the surface of the shaft, which increases wear resistance while allowing the center to remain soft for absorbing stresses caused by shifting loads.

Hollow Linear Motion Shafts

Lighter than solid shafts, hollow shafts reduce your total system weight and allow you to run various media such as electrical wiring, compressed air tubing, coolants, or lubricants through the center. Smooth, hard, and wear resistant, linear motion shafts work with linear bearings to reduce friction in manual and automated systems, such as those found in packing, machine tool, and material handling operations. The smooth surface reduces friction and wear on the bearing—the lower the microinch value a shaft has, the smoother its finish and the less friction it will create. Shafts are case-hardened to increase hardness and wear resistance. Interior is unfinished; exterior is turned, ground, and polished to tight diameter and straightness tolerances. All are chamfered to remove sharp edges and reduce damage to bearings, housings, and other components during installation.
