A plastic cover keeps dirt and grime off unused threads. The cover also resists chemicals to withstand washdowns with harsh cleaners without corroding, such as in food plants and labs. Strip the cover off the ends until you've exposed the threads you’ll need to install the rod.
Low-Strength Fastener—With a tensile strength of 50,000 psi or 60,000 psi, these rods are often used to suspend light fixtures, cable trays, and conduit from ceilings. They're about half the strength of medium-strength steel rods. To avoid stripped threads during installation, make sure your nuts are also low-strength steel.
Zinc-Plated Steel—The most common choice for areas with occasional exposure to moisture.
FDA Compliant 21 CFR 177.1980—FDA-compliant rods are safe for direct contact with food.
