    Carbide-Tipped Turning Lathe Tools

    Constructed of a carbide tip brazed onto a ground steel shank, these tools are more wear resistant than high-speed steel tools. Right-handed tools cut from right to left, left-handed tools cut from left to right, and neutral tools can cut in either direction.

    Right-Hand Cutting Direction and Left-Hand Cutting Direction—Right-hand and left-hand threading tools are for working close to the chuck.
    C2 Carbide—C2 carbide tips are abrasion resistant and less likely to chip or crack than C6 carbide tips when cutting aluminum, brass, and bronze.
    C5 Carbide—C5 carbide tips perform better than C2 carbide tips when making cuts in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. Harder than C6 carbide tips, they also handle higher speeds when cutting steel.
    C6 Carbide—C6 carbide tips hold up better than C2 carbide tips when making cuts in steel.
    Micrograin Carbide—Micrograin carbide tips outperform C2 and C6 carbide tips when cutting difficult-to-machine metal, such as stainless steel or titanium. They provide a good finish on most materials.

    Keep a variety of tools on hand to cut and shape workpieces. The tools in these sets come with carbide inserts installed. When one edge of the insert dulls, rotate to a fresh one. When all the edges are dull, you can replace the insert rather than the entire tool. Right-handed tools cut from right to left, left-handed tools cut from left to right, and neutral tools can cut in either direction. All sets come with uncoated C5 inserts.
    A Tool Bit—Styles AR and AL help you create a sharp 90° square shoulder.
    B Tool Bit—Styles BR and BL are used for roughing, interrupted cuts, and cuts where a square shoulder is not required.
    E Tool Bit—Style E are for external threading.
    V Tool Bit—Style V fit into tighter areas than Style A and B. They also create cleaner edges and a finer surface finish.

    Left-Hand Cutting Direction—Left-hand tools are for boring when the workpiece is rotating clockwise (away from the lathe operator).
    Neutral Cutting Direction— Neutral tools can be used when the workpiece is rotating in either direction.
    Micrograin Carbide—Tips are micrograin carbide, which outperform C2 and C6 carbide tips when cutting difficult-to-machine metal, such as stainless steel or titanium. They provide a good finish on most materials.

    Constructed of a carbide tip brazed onto a ground steel shank, these tools are more wear resistant than high-speed steel tools. Right-handed tools cut from right to left, left-handed tools cut from left to right, and neutral tools can cut in either direction.
    Lathe tool styles AR and AL perform along the length turning, facing, boring, and chamfering. They allow for a sharp 90° square shoulder. Lathe tool styles BR and BL perform along the length turning, facing, boring, and chamfering. They are suitable for roughing cuts, interrupted cuts, and cuts where a square shoulder is not required. Lathe tool style C perform along the length turning, facing, chamfering, and external grooving. Lathe tool style D perform along the length turning, facing, boring, chamfering, external grooving, and undercutting. Lathe tool style E are for external threading.
    C2 Carbide—C2 carbide tips are abrasion resistant and less likely to chip or crack than C6 carbide when cutting aluminum, brass, and bronze.
    C6 Carbide—C6 carbide tips hold up better than C2 carbide when making cuts in steel.
    Micrograin Carbide—Micrograin carbide tips outperform C2 and C6 tips when cutting metal that’s difficult to machine, such as stainless steel or titanium. They leave a good finish on most materials.

    Economy Indexable Lathe Tools

    A carbide insert comes installed on these tools. When one edge of the insert dulls, rotate to a fresh one. When all the edges are dull, you can replace the insert rather than the entire tool. Right-handed tools cut from right to left, left-handed tools cut from left to right, and neutral tools can cut in either direction.

    These tools come with one high-speed steel insert for use on steel and stainless steel and one high-speed steel insert for use on softer materials, such as aluminum and brass. When one point of an insert dulls, rotate it to use a sharp point. When all points dull, replace the insert rather than the whole tool.
    3/8" Wide Shank—Tool with 3/8" shank can cut external right-hand threads.
    1/2" Wide Shank—Tool with 1/2" shank can cut external right-hand threads with one end and internal right-hand threads with the other.
    3/4" Wide Shank—Tool with 3/4" shank can cut external right- or left-hand threads. To cut right-hand threads install an insert in the pocket on the left side of the tool. To cut left-hand threads install an insert in the pocket on the right side of the tool.

    Press a grip into your workpiece using your manual lathe. These tools use knurls with smooth, rounded teeth to form grooves on your material. Upon contact with your material, the tool head adjusts to center the knurls for a consistent pattern. Use left and right-hand spiral knurls together to create a diamond pattern—common for tool handles—in one go. When your knurls wear out, you can pop them out and replace them. You can also swap the included spiral knurls for straight ones.
    Swivel Bump—Swivel bump knurling tools have three sets of knurls that you can rotate between: coarse, medium, and fine pitch.

    The long steel shank on these tools can reach farther inside the workpiece than standard boring tools and can be cut to length depending on the depth of the hole. Use them to enlarge existing holes to precise diameters.
    Tips are micrograin carbide, which outperform C2 and C6 carbide tips when cutting difficult-to-machine metal, such as stainless steel or titanium. They provide a good finish on most materials.
    Right-Hand Cutting Direction—Right-hand tools are for boring when the workpiece is rotating counterclockwise (toward the lathe operator).
    Left-Hand Cutting Direction—Left-hand tools are for boring when the workpiece is rotating clockwise (away from the lathe operator).

    CNC Lathe Knurling Tools

    Perform heavy duty knurling with a CNC lathe to create a grip. These tools use knurls with smooth, rounded edges to press patterns into your material. Knurls are not included, except for internal knurling tools. Right-hand holders move from right to left toward the lathe chuck, and left-hand holders move from left to right away from the lathe chuck. Neutral holders cut in either direction.

    Scissor-Style Lathe Knurling Tools

    Knurl material without straining your lathe. Also known as straddle-type knurling tools, these tools pinch both sides of your workpiece to balance out knurling pressure rather than transfer it to your spindle. Use them on soft materials to form patterns into your workpiece for a better grip. A left- and right-hand spiral knurl comes installed, so you can form a diamond pattern—common for tool handles—in one go. When you need to replace a knurl, switch it out without removing the tool from the machine. These tools can be flipped to be used in either a right-hand or left-hand orientation. Right-hand holders move from right to left toward the lathe chuck; left-hand holders move from left to right away from the lathe chuck.
    Teeth per inch (TPI) determines how fine your pattern is. 21 TPI will create a coarse diamond pattern suitable for tool handles around 3/4" in diameter.

    Cut down on setup time for heavy duty knurling with this system of tools and holders. Each holder accepts multiple tools, so you can install the holder on your lathe once, then swap out the tool to switch tasks. Knurls are included with each tool. They’re made of heat-treated, high-speed tool steel for strength and shock resistance. A titanium nitride coating prevents wear.
    Teeth per inch (TPI) determines how fine your pattern is. The higher the number, the smoother, more closely spaced your pattern will be. A tool handle is usually knurled with 30 TPI.
