Extra High-Temperature Easy-Machine Glass-Mica Ceramic Sheets and Bars

Also known as Macor, this glass-mica ceramic withstands temperatures up to 1470° F. You can machine complicated shapes and precision parts from it in a fraction of the time it would take using other types of fired ceramic. Its good electrical and thermal resistance make it a common choice for heating and soldering fixtures.

Nonporous Ceramic Alumina Rods and Discs

Seal out air and gas in high-temperature and high-wear applications. With 0% porosity, these rods and discs fully block gas permeation that porous ceramics can't match. Their Rockwell 45N 83 hardness exceeds most technical ceramics, resisting abrasive wear in demanding environments. Rated to 3,075° F, they maintain structural integrity well beyond the limits of metals and plastics. High compressive strength and electrical insulation make them well suited for furnace components, wear guides, and sealing surfaces.

High-Strength Fracture- and Wear-Resistant Zirconia Ceramic Rods and Discs

Ideal for applications that must resist bending and wear as well as carry heavy loads, these rods and discs are often used for sleeve bearings and shafts instead of metal. Added yttria gives this material more strength and lowers the chances of cracking from impact compared to standard zirconia, alumina, and silicon nitride ceramic. If cracks do occur, they will not spread, extending the life and reliability of this material. It also means this zirconia blend resists wearing down from rubbing against another part or abrasion from chemical slurries.
Zirconia ceramic resists bending better than ceramic alumina and silicon nitride ceramic but does not withstand rapid temperature changes or high temperatures as well as other high-performance ceramics.

Easy-Machine Aluminum Nitride Ceramic Sheets and Bars

Drill and mill precisely shaped heat sinks and other electronic components that require thermal stability. Aluminum nitride is known for both drawing heat away from hot spots and blocking electrical currents. This blend—also known as Shapal Hi-M—includes boron nitride, making these sheets easier to machine than standard aluminum nitride. While the addition of boron nitride slightly decreases its heat transfer and electrically insulating properties, these sheets still perform better than other ceramics.
As aluminum nitride heats up and cools down, it won't expand or contract, keeping its size and shape stable. It won't corrode from molten metal, so you can braze or solder this material to metal. Use it near lithium batteries and other chlorides without it corroding.

Thermal-Shock- and Acid-Resistant Nitride-Bonded Silicon Carbide Ceramic Sheets

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. Thermal-Shock- and Acid-Resistant Nitride-Bonded Silicon Carbide Ceramic Sheets.
Often used as shelves and supports in unsealed kilns or as a lining in metal processing equipment, these sheets are best for applications exposed to quick temperature changes and harsh chemicals. They transfer heat better than most ceramics, and their pores let them expand with quick temperature changes. This means they can withstand high heat without sacrificing strength and chemical resistance.
Silicon carbide, the base material, withstands most chemicals, including acids and bases. This blend of silicon carbide resists chemicals better than recrystallized silicon carbide and silicon nitride, but it’s not as resistant as sintered silicon carbide. When molten non-ferrous metal touches this non-wetting material, it will bead up like water on a waterproof cushion.
Silicon carbide is second only to diamond in hardness, so it’s suitable for cutting and rubbing. It won’t wear down over time or dent on impact. However, its extreme hardness makes it difficult to machine and it must be worked using diamond-tipped tools. 1.5 times stronger than recrystallized silicon carbide, it resists cracking when bent. It won’t flake or crack if it absorbs water and then freezes (known as spalling). Because these sheets are so hard, they’re more brittle than other ceramics. Once a crack forms, the sheet loses strength.

    Fracture- and Wear-Resistant Zirconia Ceramic

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. Fracture- and Wear-Resistant Zirconia Ceramic.
As durable as metal, this temperature-resistant zirconia ceramic has been fired to obtain a high hardness. Zirconia resists chipping and cracking far better than alumina, making it ideal for parts subject to impact or mechanical stress. Use it for pump components, valve seats, bearing surfaces, and other demanding wear applications. Its low thermal conductivity helps insulate surrounding components from heat in furnaces and thermal processing equipment.

Extra-Strength Fracture- and Thermal-Shock-Resistant Silicon Nitride Ceramic Discs

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. Extra-Strength Fracture- and Thermal-Shock-Resistant Silicon Nitride Ceramic Discs.
To resist deforming, expanding, or cracking when compressed, bent, or exposed to quick temperature changes, these silicon nitride ceramic discs have been pressed into ultra-dense discs. They’re just as strong and fracture resistant as zirconia ceramic, and hold their strength and shape at higher temperatures. All are stronger, harder, and more fracture resistant than most other ceramics.
These discs are good for use as high-stress parts, such as engine parts. You can even use them as a substrate or insulator for electronic parts, such as computer chips. Since they stand up to temperature swings better than silicon carbide and mullite, they’re also good for use in furnaces and immersion heaters. Able to withstand wear, these discs can be used to make bearings, rollers, bushings, and seals.
All of these discs hold up to harsh chemicals, such as acids, but may corrode from nitric acid. They are not as corrosion resistant as silicon carbide.

High-Strength Wear- and Acid-Resistant Sintered Silicon Carbide Ceramic Sheets

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. High-Strength Wear- and Acid-Resistant Sintered Silicon Carbide Ceramic Sheets.
Sintering creates strong inner bonds, making this version of silicon carbide more resistant to wear and chemicals than other forms of silicon carbide as well as most ceramics. Since sintering doubles silicon carbide’s strength, you can replace thick sheets with a thinner sheet of this material. Using a thinner sheet reduces your system’s weight, heat loss, and energy needs. Chemical- and mechanical-finishing stations can be tiled with these sheets.
With a hardness second to diamond, this silicon carbide holds up to abrasive rubbing applications and won't dent from impact. But this hardness means it’s difficult to machine and needs to be worked with diamond-tipped tooling. It’s more brittle than other ceramics, so it loses its strength if it cracks.
This material is not as porous as other forms of silicon carbide, so while it’s gastight, it’s not as good at dissipating heat. It dissipates heat well enough to handle extreme temperature swings, but not when they're rapid.

Extra-Strength Fracture- and Thermal-Shock-Resistant Silicon Nitride Ceramic Sheets

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. Extra-Strength Fracture- and Thermal-Shock-Resistant Silicon Nitride Ceramic Sheets.
Pressed into ultra-dense sheets, these silicon nitride ceramic sheets resist deforming, expanding, or cracking when compressed, bent, or exposed to quick temperature changes. They’re just as strong and fracture resistant as zirconia ceramic, and hold their strength and shape at higher temperatures. All are stronger, harder, and more fracture resistant than most other ceramics.
Use these sheets for high-stress parts, such as engine parts. You can even use them as a substrate or insulator for electronic parts, such as computer chips. Since they stand up to temperature swings better than silicon carbide and mullite, they’re also good for use in furnaces and immersion heaters. Able to withstand wear, these sheets can be used to make cutting and roughing tools.
These sheets hold up to harsh chemicals, such as acids, but may corrode from nitric acid. They are not as corrosion resistant as silicon carbide.

High-Strength Fracture- and Wear-Resistant Zirconia Ceramic Balls

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. High-Strength Fracture- and Wear-Resistant Zirconia Ceramic Balls.
Often used instead of metal in bearings and rollers, these balls are ideal for applications where strength under heavy loads and wear resistance is needed. It's the addition of yttria that gives this zirconia more strength and lowers the chances of cracking from impact than standard zirconia, alumina, and silicon nitride ceramic. If cracks do occur, they will not spread, extending the life and reliability of the material. It also means this zirconia blend resists wearing down from rubbing against another part or abrasion from chemical slurries.
These balls do not withstand rapid temperature changes or high temperatures as well as other high-performance ceramics such as ceramic alumina and silicon nitride ceramic.

    Nonporous Ceramic Alumina Powder

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. Nonporous Ceramic Alumina Powder.
Ceramic alumina withstands higher temperatures than any other ceramic and is highly chemical resistant. This powder is high purity, so it’s inert even at high temperatures. Because alumina is ultra hard, it can be used in applications that require superior strength. It is also wear resistant, making it suitable for high-wear applications. Both thermally and electrically insulating, alumina can also be used in high-temperature and high-power electrical applications. Finished products made from alumina powder are nonporous, so they will seal out air and gas. Powder is often used in casting processes. Add it to slurries to create custom parts and tools such as crucibles, cutting tools, and laboratory ware. Alumina powder also is often used as a friction material, such as in brake linings.
Choose a particle size based on the application of your finished piece. Finer powders can be processed into finished pieces that will be harder, stronger, and more wear-resistant than those made with coarse grains. They may also have a finer finish. Parts made with coarse grain powders can be processed into pieces that are more porous and thermally shock-resistant than pieces made with finer grains. Mixing sizes can combine these properties.
99.3% Aluminum Oxide—99.3% aluminum oxide powder is slightly more reactive than 99.5% aluminum oxide powder because it’s less pure. It’s commonly used for polishing, lapping, and buffing.
99.5% Aluminum Oxide—99.5% aluminum oxide powder is more pure than 99.3% aluminum oxide, so it’s less reactive. It’s often used in the ceramic, glass, and foundry industries.

Electrical Insulating Thermally-Conductive Aluminum Nitride Ceramic

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. Electrical Insulating Thermally-Conductive Aluminum Nitride Ceramic.
One of the few known materials that both draws heat away from hot spots and blocks electrical currents, aluminum nitride sheets are great for heat sinks and other electronic components. They also have one of the fastest rates of heat transfer, second only to high-performance metals like silver and copper. Aluminum nitride maintains its size and shape as it heats up and cools down, so it won't expand or contract. Braze or solder this material to metal—it won't corrode from molten metal. You can also use this material near lithium batteries and other chlorides without it corroding.

Thermal-Shock- and Acid-Resistant Nitride-Bonded Silicon Carbide Ceramic Rods

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. Thermal-Shock- and Acid-Resistant Nitride-Bonded Silicon Carbide Ceramic Rods.
Machine these rods into nozzles for acids, pins or supports for kilns, and other parts that require extreme hardness when exposed to temperature changes and chemicals. Nitride-bonded silicon carbide is better at transferring heat than most ceramics and expands without cracking when temperatures fluctuate. This means you can use these rods in extremely high heat without sacrificing strength and chemical resistance.
The base material, silicon carbide, resists most chemicals, including acids and bases. This material blend is more chemically resistant than recrystallized silicon carbide and silicon nitride, but it’s not as resistant as sintered silicon carbide. Non-wetting, this material causes molten non-ferrous metal to bead up, like water on a waterproof cushion. It’s often used in metal processing equipment as a lining.
Nearly as hard as diamond, this material stands up to repeated wear and won’t dent on impact. A nitride coating prevents it from breaking down and becoming weak. It’s also 1.5 times stronger than recrystallized silicon carbide, so it resists cracking when bent. Even though this material is porous, it resists flaking or cracking if it absorbs water and then freezes (known as spalling). However, its hardness makes it difficult to machine, and it must be worked using diamond-tipped tools. This also makes for more brittle material than other ceramics, so once a crack forms, it loses strength.

High-Strength Wear- and Acid-Resistant Sintered Silicon Carbide Ceramic Rods

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. High-Strength Wear- and Acid-Resistant Sintered Silicon Carbide Ceramic Rods.
Create bushings and other parts that will be exposed to abrasion, harsh chemicals, high heat, and rubbing with these rods. Sintering strengthens the bonds within silicon carbide, leaving it two times stronger than other versions of silicon carbide. This means you can replace thicker rods with thinner rods, reducing the weight, heat loss, and energy needs in your system.
This silicon carbide is second only to diamond in terms of hardness, so it holds up to abrasive rubbing applications and won’t dent from impact. However, its extreme hardness means it should be worked with diamond-tipped tools. It’s difficult to machine otherwise. It’s also more brittle than other ceramics, so if it cracks, it will lose its strength.
Low porosity means this version is gastight but not as good at dissipating heat as other forms of silicon carbide. As a result, it can handle extreme temperature swings, but not when they’re rapid. Since all forms of silicon carbide stand up to high temperatures as well as chemicals, this material is frequently found in chemical processing plants, kilns, and boilers.

Creep- and Acid-Resistant Recrystallized Silicon Carbide Ceramic Sheets

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. Creep- and Acid-Resistant Recrystallized Silicon Carbide Ceramic Sheets.
Made of nearly pure silicon carbide, these sheets resist creep more than other ceramics and are consistently strong throughout, so they won’t sag under heavy loads at high temperatures. Because they withstand extreme temperatures, they’re often used as kiln furniture and machined into structural furnace components. This material has pores to help it expand during temperature swings to avoid cracking.
Silicon carbide resists chemicals such as acids and bases. It’s more chemically resistant than silicon nitride, but not as resistant as nitride-bonded or sintered silicon carbide.
Silicon carbide is nearly as hard as diamond and resists wear and abrasion. It won’t dent upon impact. Materials this hard are difficult to machine and can only be worked using diamond-tipped tools. Silicon carbide’s hardness makes it more brittle than other ceramics, so it will not perform as well as silicon nitride and yttria-stabilized zirconia if it cracks. This material resists breaking when bent, but it’s less bendable than sintered and nitride-bonded silicon carbide.

    Open End

    Closed End

Often used as a protective shield in thermocouples and other conditions with drastic climate changes, these SiAlON ceramic tubes won't deform, expand, or crack when repeatedly exposed to large temperature changes. Submerge the closed end of the tube into harsh settings, such as tanks and furnaces, to protect contents from coming into contact with harmful liquids and gases.
These tubes are stronger and resist thermal shock better than mullite and alumina, though they don’t remain as stable in ultra-high temperatures. They're not as hard as silicon carbide, so they shouldn't be used when wear resistance is necessary. Because they hold up to chemicals, they’re good for use with molten metal, such as aluminum and zinc alloy. Similar to nonporous alumina, these tubes help seal out gas and liquids.

    Easy-Machine Aluminum Nitride Ceramic Rods

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. Easy-Machine Aluminum Nitride Ceramic Rods.
Turn and drill intricate components such as heat sinks, fixture parts, and other electronics parts where thermal stability is important. Aluminum nitride both draws heat away from hot spots and blocks electrical currents. Also known as Shapal Hi-M, this blend includes boron nitride, so these rods are easier to machine than standard aluminum nitride. The addition of boron nitride slightly decreases heat transfer and electrically insulating properties; but this material still performs better than other ceramics.
Aluminum nitride won’t expand or contract as it heats up and cools down—its size and shape remains stable. Braze or solder this material to metal—it won't corrode from molten metal. You can use this material near lithium batteries and other chlorides without it corroding.

Creep- and Acid-Resistant Recrystallized Silicon Carbide Ceramic Rods

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. Creep- and Acid-Resistant Recrystallized Silicon Carbide Ceramic Rods.
Over 99% pure, these rods have the strength of silicon carbide throughout, so they resist deforming under heavy loads at high temperatures (known as creep). They’re often used as supports in kilns. Because silicon carbide is porous, it expands in high temperatures without cracking. This material’s porous nature means it’s less flexible than sintered and nitride-bonded silicon carbide.
Silicon carbide won’t break down from most chemicals and is often machined into crucibles to hold chemical compounds. It resists chemicals better than silicon nitride, but not as well as nitride-bonded or sintered silicon carbide.
Silicon carbide’s hardness is second only to diamond, so it withstands repeated wear and won’t dent on impact. However, its hardness makes it difficult to machine, and it must be worked using diamond-tipped tools. It’s more brittle than other ceramics, so once a crack forms, it loses its strength.

    Thermal-Shock-Resistant Mullite Ceramic Powder

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. Thermal-Shock-Resistant Mullite Ceramic Powder.
Mullite can withstand very high temperatures and will not deform or crack when repeatedly exposed to temperature fluctuations. Add it to slurries to create crucibles, ladles, and other parts by casting it. Mullite powder is common in furnaces, heaters, thermocouples, electrical insulation, and glass- and steel-industry refractories. When exposed to chemicals that are used to make steel, such as acid, it will not corrode. Due to fused fabrication, it has higher purity and more uniformity which leads to better thermal shock resistance and low thermal expansion.

    High-Temperature Acid-Resistant Silicon-Carbide Ceramic Foam

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. High-Temperature Acid-Resistant Silicon-Carbide Ceramic Foam.
A silicon carbide coating over a carbon foam base combines the hardness, chemical resistance, and high temperatures silicon carbide is known for with the lightweight versaitility of foam. It’s often used for cores in composite layers and to filter molten metal and corrosive liquids.
The silicon carbide coating acts as a thermal conductor, transferring heat to quickly cool liquids that pass through. Known for its hardness, silicon carbide won’t break down from repeated abrasion. However, because it’s so hard, this material is more brittle than plain carbon foam and less impact resistant than balsa wood, PET, and PVC foam cores.
Acids and bases can’t penetrate the silicon carbide coating, even at high temperatures. Instead, contaminants stick to the surface, making it a great filter for corrosive liquids and environmental pollutants such as exhaust. If using this material as a filter, choose a foam with more pores per inch for a slower flow rate, and a foam with fewer pores per inch for a faster flow rate.
If you cut this material, the underlying carbon foam is exposed. Carbon foam does not have the temperature range and chemical resistance of its silicon carbide coating, so it will break down more quickly at exposed points.

    Acid-Resistant Silicon Carbide Ceramic Balls

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. Acid-Resistant Silicon Carbide Ceramic Balls.
Extremely hard with excellent corrosion resistance, this silicon carbide ceramic is often used for rubbing parts such as bearings and bushings in chemical-processing environments. This material’s hardness means it resists abrasion and wear, but also makes it more brittle than other ceramics. Don’t use it under heavy loads or at high speeds. Nearly chemically inert, it resists corrosion better than other ceramics when in contact with acids and other chemicals. Silicon carbide ceramic conducts heat well and doesn’t expand significantly from heat, so it won’t deform or crack from temperature swings. Rated for use at up to 2550° F, it’s good for use in furnaces and refractories.

High-Purity Acid-Resistant Green Silicon Carbide Powder

Image of Product. Front orientation. Ceramic. High-Purity Acid-Resistant Green Silicon Carbide Powder.
Highly pure, this green silicon carbide powder is consistent between batches and bonds better than less pure powders, yielding less cracking and wear in finished products. Products made from green silicon carbide are tough, have excellent corrosion resistance, and good thermal shock resistance. They’re often used in technical ceramics applications such as mechanical seals, thread guides, and heat exchangers.
Silicon carbide is nearly chemically inert, meaning it won’t corrode in chemical processing environments. It’s good for use in rubbing parts such as bearings and bushings because it dissipates heat well and doesn’t warp from temperature swings. Mullite, however, is often preferred for applications that include rapid temperature swings. This silicon carbide operates in heat up to 3600° F, so it’s commonly used in furnaces and refractories. It’s so hard that it’s often used for body armor and abrasion processes such as pressure blasting. It’s more brittle than other ceramics, though, and is best used with low weight loads at slow to moderate speeds. This powder meets tightly graded, narrow size distribution JIS tolerance standards.
