    High-Speed Steel Step Drill Bits

Image of Product. Front orientation. Drill Bits. High-Speed Steel Step Drill Bits.
Image of Specification. Standard. Front orientation. Contains Border. Standard Point. For Metal.

    Standard

Drill multiple hole sizes using only one bit. These have steps with progressively larger diameters—the deeper they drill, the bigger the hole. Count the steps as you drill to achieve the proper size. These bits also deburr as they cut, so they're good for thin materials like sheet metal and plastic panels. Wear and heat resistant, high-speed steel is versatile for use on a range of materials.
Black Oxide—The dark finish increases wear resistance and reduces friction to improve chip flow, so these bits can last 50% longer than uncoated bits.
Titanium Nitride (TiN) Coated—Drill at higher speeds and last longer than uncoated and oxide-coated bits, especially on tough materials like hardened steel and nickel.
Uncoated—The most economical option, uncoated bits perform best when used on low-carbon steel and aluminum. Polished to reduce friction, they're also known as bright finish bits.

    Extended Length

    Standard

Cut large holes with drill presses and portable drills that have a standard-size chuck. The shank on these bits has a smaller diameter than the cutting tip. High-speed steel is good for general purpose drilling in most metals. Also known as Silver and Deming bits.
Jobbers' Length—These bits have the balance of rigidity and length needed for most applications.
Extended Length—Drill through panels and thick workpieces with our longest bits. Their length is good for creating deep holes but makes them less rigid than other bits. As a result, they are more prone to wobbling or breaking, especially when drilling hard materials.

Our hardest reduced-shank bits, these stay sharp at high temperatures and faster speeds. The shank is smaller than the cutting tip to make large holes with drill presses and portable drills that have a standard-size chuck. They offer the best performance on hard and abrasive materials, such as titanium. Also known as Silver and Deming bits.

    Drill Bits for Wood

Image of Product. Front orientation. Drill Bits. Drill Bits for Wood.
Make rough holes in wood for jobs such as running wire and pipe through framing studs and sheets. These bits have two sharp edges for faster cuts than fluted bits and won't cause the surface of the material to splinter. A centering point keeps them stable while drilling soft and hard woods such as pine, plywood, and oak. Also known as spade bits.

Not only do these bits bore holes faster than standard smooth-finish bits, they create less friction and heat buildup to last longer. The spurred teeth have a long life, but they're less effective at guiding the bit so cuts on angled and overlapping holes tend to be rougher. Also known as multispur bits.

    Tight-Tolerance Water-Hardening W1 Tool Steel Rods

Image of Product. Front orientation. Steel. Tight-Tolerance Water-Hardening W1 Tool Steel Rods.
Ready for turning in your lathe, these rods are precision ground and held to strict diameter and straightness tolerances. Also known as drill rod. With far less alloy content than other tool steel, W1 is the most machinable we offer. These rods are often used to make hammers, files, and reamers—tools that don't require the dimensional stability of A2 or O1. These rods are also decarb-free, which means any surface flaws created during the manufacturing process have been removed. This makes them even more machinable and leads to better results from heat treating or finishing. Heat treat the surface for extra wear resistance. Or, quench this steel in water to boost its hardness and strength, giving it a sharper, more durable edge for small tools.
