The industry standards, IMC and RMC conduit systems offer the most durable protection indoors, outdoors, and underground. Both types have the same outside diameter, so they use many of the same fittings. This interchangeability makes retrofits easier and reduces the parts you need to keep on hand.

RMC—The choice when you need maximum impact and crush resistance. The thickest and heaviest conduit option, it’s often found in older installations or used as structural support.
Thin-Wall (EMT) Metal Conduit and Fittings

With a thinner wall, this conduit is a lighter alternative to IMC and RMC. The most common choice for indoor walls and ceilings, it shields wiring from scrapes and bumps. EMT can dent or crush from impact, however, so it should be routed away from high‑traffic areas where carts and vehicles pass through.
