Spider Couplings

With two hubs gripping a rubbery spider in the center, these couplings damp vibration and transfer torque while flexing to handle misaligned shafts. The metal hubs never touch each other, so there's no need for lubrication. Also known as Lovejoy® couplings. For a complete coupling, select two hubs and one spider or two hubs, one split spider, and one retaining ring. Choose components with the same trade size to ensure they'll fit together.

Hubs

The metal body mounts onto shafts to transmit torque from one shaft to the other through the flexible center.

Round—Hubs for the standard shaft type.

Keyed—Mount onto shafts with a matching keyway.

Aluminum—Lightweight and corrosion resistant.

Iron—Best for dry environments, since moisture will cause these hubs to rust.

Steel—Best for dry environments, since moisture will cause these hubs to rust.

303 Stainless Steel—These corrosion-resistant hubs withstand mild cleaning solutions.

Clamp-On Shaft Mount—Grip shafts evenly without marring them and hold tighter than set screws. Tighten the clamping screws to secure.

Buna-N—Highly tear resistant and the best choice to absorb vibration and shock.

Polyurethane Rubber—Resist tearing better than Buna-N and provide a balance of stiffness and moderate vibration damping.

Hytrel—Stiffer than Buna-N, these spiders transmit torque from one shaft to the other almost fully but offer minimal vibration damping.

Metal-Impregnated Buna-N—Vibration damping and highly tear resistant. The rubber contains metal, so it will trigger a metal detector if a piece contaminates your batch.

Metal-Impregnated Hytrel—Stiffer than Buna-N, these spiders transmit torque from one shaft to the other almost fully but offer minimal vibration damping. The Hytrel contains metal, so it will trigger a metal detector if a piece contaminates your batch.

Precision Spider Couplings

Position shafts and handle misalignment on precision motors, pumps, and other equipment that requires highly controlled movements. These couplings have a hard, rubber spider to fully transfer torque from one shaft to the other (zero backlash). They're also known as precision jaw couplings. Choose components with the same trade size to ensure they'll fit together.

High-Torque Spider Couplings

With a thick split spider in the center, these transmit higher torque than standard split spider couplings. Connect them to pumps, mixers, and other equipment that generates heavy torque. The spider also prevents metal-to-metal contact between the hubs, so there's no need for lubrication. For a complete coupling, select two hubs, one split spider, and one split spider cover. Choose components with the same trade size to ensure they'll fit together.

Hubs

The metal body mounts onto shafts to transmit torque from one shaft to the other through the flexible center.

Steel—Best for dry environments, since moisture will cause these hubs to rust.

Split Spiders

Unlike standard spiders, you can install these without using tools, removing hubs, or realigning shafts. Hold them in place with a retaining ring.

Urethane Rubber—Tough, with plastic-like tear resistance. Higher-durometer spiders are more rigid for more precise positioning, but they absorb less vibration.

Splined-to-Keyed Spider Couplings


	Diameter

Connect heavy duty machinery with splined shafts to components with keyed shafts—a hydraulic pump and an electric motor, for example. A central spider damps vibration, absorbs shock, and adjusts for misalignment. No lubrication required. For a complete coupling, select two hubs and one spider.
