Ceramic Alumina Lathe Tool Inserts for Hardened Steel and Cast Iron

These inserts are made with a black ceramic alumina on the cutting edges. Compared to carbide inserts, ceramic lasts longer in hardened-steel and cast iron tooling applications because it is chemically inert and has better heat resistance. Ceramic inserts have comparable wear resistance to cubic boron nitride, but ceramic is best for continuous and light cutting while cubic boron nitride can also be used in heavy interruption. These inserts have multiple cutting edges, so when a cutting edge becomes dull, rotate the insert in the holder to use a sharp edge. Larger nose angles and larger tip radii provide a stronger cutting edge but result in increased vibration and a rougher finish.

Cermet Lathe Tool Inserts for Steel

Combine the strength and wear resistance of high-performance metals with the heat resistance of ceramic—these cermet inserts cut steel at higher speeds and last longer than standard carbide inserts. Their PVD coating keeps them sharper longer than CVD-coated inserts. This means you can also use them as precision inserts or to cut non-ferrous metals. Install them in a matching holder.
Inserts with a larger nose angle and tip radius remove more material with each pass, but they cut less precisely than smaller inserts. Select the insert with the largest nose angle and tip radius that will turn your workpiece to the shape you want.

For Semi-Interrupted Cutting Conditions—Inserts for semi-interrupted cutting conditions are used to machine imperfectly round workpieces, such as shafts with a keyway. They’re the most common type of insert.
Individual—Inserts sold individually come packed in a clear plastic case to protect cutting edges during shipment.
Package—Inserts sold in packages come factory sealed from the manufacturer for maximum traceability.
Positive Rake Angle—Positive-rake inserts stick out in front of the holder to reach tight spaces on the workpiece. However, they only have cutting edges on one side.
For Finishing Cutting Operation—Use finishing inserts at the end of your turning process to remove minimal material for a smooth surface finish.

For Interrupted Cutting Conditions—Inserts for interrupted cutting conditions are best for workpieces that will come in and out of contact with the insert, such as hex bars.
Individual—Inserts sold individually come packed in a clear plastic case to protect cutting edges during shipment.
Package—Inserts sold in packages come factory sealed from the manufacturer for maximum traceability.
Negative Rake Angle—Negative-rake inserts are the first choice for most turning applications. With strong cutting edges on two faces, they last longer than comparable positive-rake inserts. When all the edges on one face are worn, flip the insert over.
For Finishing Cutting Operation—Use finishing inserts at the end of your turning process to remove minimal material for a smooth surface finish.

Reinforced Ceramic Lathe Tool Inserts for Heat-Resistant Super Alloys

Made from heat-resistant ceramic, these inserts are reinforced with strands of silicon carbide to add strength and prevent chips or fractures. Also called whisker ceramic inserts, they last up to four times longer than carbide inserts when cutting nickel- or cobalt-based superalloys. Designed for semi-interrupted cutting, they're often used to machine imperfectly round workpieces, such as a shaft with a keyway. They’re tough enough for roughing, or quick material removal, but you can also use them for medium cutting and finishing.
These negative-rake inserts are the first choice for most turning applications. They have cutting edges on both sides, so you can flip them over when the edges on one face wear out. Since they have a 0° lead angle, or neutral cut direction, they can cut from either right to left or left to right.
Inserts with a larger tip radius remove more material with each pass but cut less precisely than smaller inserts. Select the insert with the largest tip radius that still turns your workpiece to the desired shape.
