About Reamers

High-Speed Steel Round-Shank Reamers

The shank diameter is slightly smaller than the reamer diameter.
Straight-flute reamers are for general purpose cutting.
Spiral-flute reamers create a smoother finish than straight flutes and work well in keyways and other applications with an interrupted cut. Reamers with a right-hand spiral pull chips upward as they cut, so they’re often used in blind holes. Reamers with a left-hand spiral push chips downward as they cut, making them good for through holes.

Inch Size Hand Reamers

Use a straight-handle tap wrench (sold separately) to turn these reamers by hand. The cutting end is slightly tapered to ease hole entry for the final sizing of drilled holes. Choose a straight-handle tap wrench that fits the diameter of your hand reamer.
Straight-flute reamers are for general purpose cutting.
Spiral-flute reamers have a left-hand spiral and a right-hand cut. They push chips downward as they cut, so they’re often used in through holes. Spiral flutes create a smoother finish than straight flutes and work well in keyways and other applications with an interrupted cut.

Expansion Round-Shank Reamers

When the reamer wears down, twist the set screw to expand the diameter, and then grind the reamer to its original size. These reamers are carbide-tipped tool steel for excellent abrasion and heat resistance when cutting hard and abrasive materials. The shank diameter is slightly smaller than the reamer diameter.
These reamers are not designed for producing holes larger than the listed diameter or for producing holes of various sizes. The adjustment screw should never be loosened.

Round-Shank Reamers for Hole Alignment with Safety Collar

A collar on the shank prevents you from reaming past the cutting edge. These reamers are for use with hand-held electric and air tools. Also known as bridge reamers, car reamers, and aligning reamers, they ream, true, enlarge, align, and debur holes. All have tapered ends for easy entry into misaligned holes. They are not for reaming tapered holes.

Short-Length Round-Shank Reamers for Hole Alignment

Correct hole misalignment when working in confined spaces. About 2" shorter than standard hole-alignment reamers of similar thicknesses, these reamers give you extra room to move when there’s limited space between you and your workpiece. Use with hand-held electric and air tools. Not for reaming tapered holes.

Hex Nut-Shank Reamers for Hole Alignment with Safety Magnets

Magnets on the hex nut hold the reamer in place in your tool and prevent it from accidentally falling when not in the square-drive impact wrench socket. Also known as bridge reamers, car reamers, and aligning reamers, they ream, true, enlarge, align, and debur holes. All have tapered ends for easy entry into misaligned holes. Do not use for reaming tapered holes.
Reamers with spiral flutes are a good choice for materials that are difficult to ream, such as high-carbon steel and cast iron.
