Mount components anywhere along the length of these shafts. For secure torque transmission, slide a component from either end and lock it into place with an ANSI machine key (sold separately).
Carbon Steel—Strong and easy to machine. These shafts work best in dry environments since moisture will cause steel to rust.
Corrosion-Resistant 304 Stainless Steel—Withstand moisture and mild cleaning solutions, such as acetone and ammonia. However, these shafts are more difficult to machine than carbon steel shafts.
Highly Corrosion-Resistant 316 Stainless Steel—More corrosion resistant than 303 and 304 stainless steel shafts. They stand up to salt water and harsh chemicals, such as bleach, chlorine, and phosphoric acid.

Air-Hardening A2 Tool Steel Rods
Made of A2 steel, they are more wear resistant than O1 rods and discs. They also keep a sharper cutting edge. When heat treated for added wear resistance, they don’t require baths or quenching and can be air-hardened. A2 tool steel is widely used for punches, blades, and hammers. These rods and discs are decarb-free, which means any surface flaws created during the manufacturing process have been removed. Precision ground and held to a strict straightness tolerance, these rods are ready for turning in your lathe. Also known as drill rod, this A2 tool steel is more wear resistant than O1 and keeps a sharper cutting edge. It’s air-hardening, so it doesn’t require baths or quenching after heat treatment. This tool steel is often used for punches, blades, and hammers.

Ready for turning in a lathe, these rods are precision ground to a tight diameter tolerance. They’re also known as drill rod. Often used for dies, punches, and gauges, O1 tool steel is an oil-hardening material that resists wear and abrasion. It can also be surface hardened with heat treating for added wear resistance.

Tight-Tolerance Water-Hardening W1 Tool Steel Rods

Ready for turning in your lathe, these rods are precision ground and held to strict diameter and straightness tolerances. Also known as drill rod. With far less alloy content than other tool steel, W1 is the most machinable we offer. These rods are often used to make hammers, files, and reamers—tools that don't require the dimensional stability of A2 or O1. These rods are also decarb-free, which means any surface flaws created during the manufacturing process have been removed. This makes them even more machinable and leads to better results from heat treating or finishing. Heat treat the surface for extra wear resistance. Or, quench this steel in water to boost its hardness and strength, giving it a sharper, more durable edge for small tools.
