Made of 4340 alloy steel, these rods hold up to high heat, hard impacts, and heavy wear thanks to high levels of nickel, chromium, and molybdenum. They’re commonly used for high‑stress components such as shafts, gears, and other load‑bearing parts. For even more wear resistance, you can harden the surface with heat treating.

Impact-Resistant 15-5 PH Stainless Steel Rods
Tougher and more fracture resistant than 17-4 PH stainless steel. Often used for gears and shafts, these rods are more likely to bend than break when absorbing impact. When heat treated, they have a yield strength of 170,000 psi. They maintain their corrosion resistance in temperatures up to 1100° F.

Highly Wear-Resistant 420 Stainless Steel Rods
Highly wear resistant, 420 stainless steel is used for wrenches, shafts, and other parts that frequently grind against metal. High carbon content boosts its hardness and strength. Yet like other 400 series stainless steel, 420 is less corrosion resistant than 304. It maintains its corrosion resistance in temperatures up to 1150° F.

Machinable 416 Stainless Steel Rods
Drill, mill, and turn at high speeds without clogging your cutting tools. Alloyed with sulfur, 416 is the easiest type of stainless steel to machine. A good choice for gears, screws, and shafts, it won't wear down when it grinds against other metal parts. It also maintains its corrosion resistance in temperatures as hot as 1200° F. However, it's not as corrosion resistant as other types of stainless steel, such as 304 and 17-4 PH.

Weldable 321 Stainless Steel Rods
One of the easiest types of stainless steel to weld. Alloyed with titanium, 321 is unlikely to crack while welding and won't corrode around weld points. It stays strong and corrosion resistant in temperatures as hot as 1500° F.
