    Shims

    Image of Product. Front orientation. Shims. Sold Individually, Round.
    With thickness tolerances as fine as a strand of hair, these shims precisely align, space, and level components on shafts, arbors, and machinery.
    You can stack multiple shims to achieve your exact thickness, but stacking more than four may cause them to shift. Remember, fewer shims are better, so a couple of thicker shims are more stable than a bunch of thin shims.
    18-8 Stainless Steel—The choice for wet and outdoor environments, these shims resist rust. However, they’ll corrode or pit when exposed to salt water and chemicals.
    Highly Corrosion-Resistant 316 Stainless Steel—Superior to 18-8 stainless steel, these shims won't degrade when exposed to harsh weather, salt water, and most chemicals.
    Carbon Steel—Best for dry environments since moisture will cause these shims to rust.
    Brass—With a warm, polished look, these shims are often chosen for their appearance. Similar to 18-8 stainless steel, brass is corrosion resistant enough to stand up to wet environments.
    Color-Coded Plastic—These shims are color coded by thickness to quickly spot and grab the right size every time. Softer than metal, they won't mar delicate surfaces and they will never rust.

    Aluminum—An alternative to stainless steel for rust resistance but less hard so it may not retain its shape. One-third the weight of steel, it's often used in robotics and automation.
    Brass—Picked for its warm, polished look. Similar to 18-8 stainless steel, it resists rusting in wet and outdoor areas.
    Copper—A good conductor of heat, it’s often used to install heat sinks. As our softest metal, it prevents component damage but may not retain its shape as well as other metals.
    Nickel—Often used in marine and water treatment applications, it won't break down from salt water and alkalis. It's also a good conductor of heat.
    Ultra-Chemical-Resistant PTFE—The most chemical-resistant shim stock we offer, it stands up to the widest range of harsh acids, bases, solvents, and corrosive cleaners, even at temperatures up to 500° F. It also won't mar delicate surfaces.
    Plastic—Softer than metal, it won't mar delicate surfaces and it will never rust.
    Temper Rating—Choose half hard to create shims that you’ll need to bend or shape. Opt for full hard to make stronger shims that will maintain their shape under loads.

    Tab End

    Slip these shims around existing mounting fasteners to precisely align and level components such as pumps, compressors, and gearboxes with motors, all without disassembling them. They’re also good for leveling machines on uneven surfaces. To reduce sizing errors, these shims are either labeled with their thickness so there's no need to measure or color coded by thickness to quickly spot the right size.
    You can stack multiple shims to achieve your exact thickness, but stacking more than four may cause them to shift. Remember, fewer shims are better, so a couple of thicker shims are more stable than a bunch of thin shims.

    If you need a unique shim shape or size, we’ll precision cut it for you. With thickness tolerances as fine as a strand of hair, these shims precisely align, space, and level components on shafts, arbors, and machinery.
    You can stack multiple shims to achieve your exact thickness, but stacking more than four may cause them to shift. Remember, fewer shims are better, so a couple of thicker shims are more stable than a bunch of thin shims.
    Send your dimensioned DWG, DXF, IGES, or STEP file to sales@mcmaster.com. Please leave at least 1/8" wall between shim edge and holes. Minimum hole size is 1/8". Shims should be no smaller than 1" × 1" square or 1" OD. Maximum shim dimension is the largest overall length, width, or diameter of your custom shim.
