Hardened Multipurpose 4140 Alloy Steel Hex Bars

- Yield Strength: 105,000 psi
- Hardness: Rockwell C35 (Hard)
- Fabrication: Hot Rolled
- Specifications Met: ASTM A29, ASTM A108, ASTM A193
A hardened surface makes these hex bars more impact and abrasion resistant than untreated bars. They’re also stress relieved to reduce the chance of warping during machining. These hex bars are often used to create gears, shafts, and other hard-working parts. They resist fracturing from repeated stress. All have been manufactured to meet ASTM standards for quality and performance. Also known as chrome-moly steel.
Note: Hex bars may be made from either 4140 or 4142 alloy steel. They are interchangeable in most applications.

Easy-to-Weld 4130 Alloy Steel Rods
- Yield Strength: Not Rated
- Hardness: Rockwell C21 (Hard)
- Fabrication: See table
- Specifications Met: See table
Made from 4130 alloy steel, also known as chrome-moly steel, these rods have low carbon content for good weldability. They’re often used to make gears and bushings. The surface of these rods is hardened to make them more resistant to wear and impacts. They’re also normalized, which is a heating process that relieves internal stress and helps prevent cracking during machining or additional hardening. These rods have been manufactured to ASTM and SAE standards for quality and performance.

Wear-Resistant 4820 Alloy Steel

- Yield Strength: 73,000 psi
- Hardness: Rockwell B96 (Medium)
- Heat Treatable: Yes
- Max. Hardness After Heat Treatment: Not Rated
- Fabrication: Hot Rolled
- Specifications Met: ASTM A29, ASTM A322
Often used for gears, bushings, and pins, this 4820 alloy steel resists wear from friction and abrasion. It’s a case-hardening steel, which means that heat treating will create a hard surface without making the interior brittle. This steel is manufactured to ASTM standards for performance and quality.

High-Stress-Resistant 6150 Alloy Steel

- Yield Strength: 59,000 psi
- Hardness: Rockwell C15 (Medium)
- Heat Treatable: Yes
- Max. Hardness After Heat Treatment: Rockwell C55
- Fabrication: Cold Drawn
- Specifications Met: ASTM A108, ASTM A29
Made with chromium and vanadium, 6150 alloy steel holds up to wear, shock, and repeated stress better than 5160 steel. This steel maintains its shape and becomes very hard when heat treated, so it’s good for applications involving vibration, impact, and abrasion. Its rods and discs are often used to make disc springs, gears, and shafts. This steel has been manufactured to meet ASTM standards for quality and performance.
