Plastic Syringes
Made of plastic, these syringes are shatter resistant and suitable for use with a variety of liquids. However, they’re not as scratch resistant as glass or stainless steel syringes and less precise than glass ones.
Syringes with a luer lock connection have a more secure needle connection than syringes with a luer slip connection. They connect to needles with a luer lock connection to dispense contents. Twist the needle into place to secure the hold. Use black syringes to dispense light-activated contents.
Syringes with a luer slip connection connect to needles with a luer lock connection simply by sliding the needle onto the fitting—it will be held in place by friction rather than a locking mechanism.

Glass Syringes
Made to a tighter tolerance than plastic syringes, these glass syringes are better at dispensing small, precise samples with little left over. They’re also durable and resistant to chemicals, so they’re unlikely to wear or warp from your samples, so they'll have a long, reliable life. Their precision makes them great for gas chromatography.
For quick and easy needle connections, choose between luer lock and luer slip syringes. Syringes with a luer lock connection secure onto a luer lock needle with a twist. They have a stronger connection than luer slip syringes. When precision is a top concern, choose between a threaded and cemented connection. They’re both designed for the needle to sit exactly at the zero graduation mark, which minimizes leftover material in the barrel after dispensing. Syringes with a threaded connection are about the same in terms of connection strength as a syringe with a luer lock connection and have a stronger connection than luer slip syringes. Syringes with a cemented connection come ready to use with a needle permanently attached. They’re often used with syringe pumps. However, once the needle bends, breaks, or clogs, the entire syringe has to be replaced. They also aren’t autoclavable.
Syringes with a piston are ideal for use with gases because the piston creates a leak-free, gastight seal against the barrel. They’re also great for liquids that don’t fully mix—the piston’s seal wipes off any deposits from liquids. With no deposits, the plunger won’t get stuck while dispensing. The piston’s seal is also tight enough that the plunger won’t retract on its own, so you can dispense from these syringes in a slow, controlled manner.
Autoclavable syringes must be disassembled before autoclaving. Keep in mind that repeated autoclaving can reduce their lifespan, so chemical sterilization is preferred.
Syringes with an adjustable stop collar let you dispense the same volume consistently when you place the collar at your desired point along the barrel.

Precision-Dispensing Glass Syringes
A turn of the threaded plunger dispenses extremely small quantities—as small as a speck of dust. The fine threads on these syringes inch the plunger forward with every turn for a controlled, precise flow. You won’t accidentally push too much out with these syringes.
A glass barrel adds to their precision. It’s made to a tighter tolerance than a plastic barrel, so the plunger seals against the barrel and wipes it clean as it moves, dispensing every last drop. The glass barrel is also durable and resistant to chemicals, so it’s unlikely to wear or warp from your sample for a long, reliable life. Thanks to their precision, these syringes are often used for gas chromatography.
Attach a needle with a luer slip connection. Slide a needle onto the fitting and friction will hold it in place.
Before autoclaving these syringes, disassemble them. Keep in mind that autoclaving can reduce their lifespan, so chemical sterilization is preferred.

Gas Sampling Glass Syringes
Collect, transport, and store gas and liquid samples without worrying about evaporation or leaks. These syringes have a locking valve that keeps your sample secure. They also have a piston that creates a leak-free, gastight seal against the barrel.
With a glass barrel, these syringes have a long lifespan and aren’t likely to wear or warp from your samples. They have a tighter tolerance than syringes with plastic barrels, so they’re better at controlling small, precise flows. They’ll dispense all material inside with nothing left over—the needle sits exactly at the zero graduation mark, and the piston’s seal against the barrel wipes off any deposits from liquids. With no deposits, the plunger won’t get stuck while dispensing. The piston’s seal is also tight enough that the plunger won’t retract on its own, so you can dispense from these syringes in a slow, controlled manner. Thanks to their precision, these syringes are often used for gas chromatography.
To attach the needle, slide it in at the base of these syringes and secure it with its locking nut. Made of stainless steel, the needle has a smooth surface that limits friction. It’s also sharp and beveled so it can be inserted without clogging or leaving a hole. This makes it ideal for puncturing septa lids.

Bulb Droppers
Squeeze the bulb to dispense liquids one drop at a time. These droppers are also known as transfer pipettes.
Fine tip droppers help you dispense very small volumes. They’re often used with fast-flowing liquids, such as water and gasoline.
Removable bulb droppers are easy to clean.
Droppers with graduation marks have molded markings that won’t fade or wash off.
Soda-lime glass droppers are easier to see through than plastic droppers, and they’re less likely to stain. They withstand chemicals, so you can sterilize them for repeated use.
Sterile droppers are individually cleaned and bagged to avoid contaminating your sample.

Micropipettes
These fixed-volume micropipettes dispense a small amount of liquid for speedy, routine dispensing jobs. Plunger tip is color-coded by capacity. They require a tip (sold separately).

Pipettes
Pair these pipettes with a pipette pump to transfer measured streams of liquid. Each pipette has a color-coded band that indicates capacity so you can quickly differentiate one from the next.
Plastic pipettes have a filter to protect their pump from aerosol and splash contamination. Pipette filters are especially important when working with acids and corrosive solutions. Borosilicate and soda-lime glass pipettes withstand cleaning chemicals, so you can sterilize them for repeated use. They provide a clearer view over time than plastic pipettes because samples won't stain them. Soda-lime glass pipettes have extremely tight tolerances to dispense the same amount of liquid each time, keeping your measurements precise. Choose a pipette based on the capacity you need to dispense.
Pipettes with graduation marks let you accurately measure samples of various sizes with a single pipette.
