Compare wire vs. cable and choose the right option based on gauge, number of conductors, insulation, and current rating.

    Outdoor Lead Wire

The EPDM insulation on this wire won’t become brittle or crack from sunlight, humidity, rain, temperature changes, abrasion from dirt and debris, and other rough outdoor conditions. It meets Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) standards for material quality.

SC Cable—SC wire is a good choice for temporary setups powering outdoor lights, equipment, generators, and power distribution boxes, since its thick insulation makes it easy to move and reuse. Commonly found at outdoor events, it’s also known as stage cable.
UL 2556 FT5—All are flame rated, so they meets requirements for preventing the spread of flames based on a timed test. FT5 wire is suspended horizontally during testing.

Image of Product. Side1 orientation. Lead Wire. Outdoor Lead Wire, 2,000V AC.
DLO Cable—DLO wire carries higher voltages than SC wire, making it the better choice for heavy duty applications. Use it to run power to motors, cranes, and other equipment in shipyards, mines, and oil- and gas-drilling rigs. Also known as diesel locomotive cable, this wire was originally designed to wire trains. An outer layer of chlorinated polyethylene plastic (CPE) gives it increased resistance to chemicals, heat, and flames. It’s also rated RHW-2, so it can be used underground and in wet locations.
UL 2556 FT4—All are flame rated, so they meets requirements for preventing the spread of flames based on a timed test. FT4 wire is mounted to a vertical tray during testing.

    Heavy Duty Harsh-Environment Power Cable

Image of Product. Front orientation. Power Cable. Heavy Duty Harsh-Environment Power Cable.
Delivering up to 2,000 volts in the harshest conditions, this Type W cable is often used in mining equipment and drilling rigs. It resists abrasion if you drag it across rocky terrain and won’t get crushed even when heavy equipment drives over it. The EPDM jacket stands up to chemicals, oil, and moisture. MSHA accepted, it meets mining safety standards, so you can rely on it where other power cables fail.

    Variable-Frequency Drive Motor Cable

This cable is used in variable-frequency drive motors. It has a layer of braid and foil shielding that provides excellent protection against signal interference caused by voltage fluctuations and current spikes. The industry designation is WTTC, so it can be installed in cable trays or raceway in a wind turbine generator. It’s flame rated FT4 to meet requirements for preventing the spread of flames based on a timed test with material mounted to a vertical tray. The insulation resists oil.

    With Uninsulated Ground Wire

Cable with power wires sends electricity to run a motor.
Uninsulated Ground Wire—Cable with an uninsulated ground wire has an additional uninsulated ground wire you can use to ground the cable’s foil shielding. Also known as a drain wire, it isn’t counted in the cable’s number of wires.
MSHA Accepted—MSHA-accepted cable meets Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) standards for material quality.

    Abrasion-Resistant Wire Sleeving

Image of Product. Front orientation. Wire Sleeving. Abrasion-Resistant Wire Sleeving.
Tightly braided fibers give this sleeving excellent abrasion resistance. As it wears, the fibers frizz and make the outer wall thicker for improved protection. The interior is smooth to reduce snags during installation. It meets Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) standards for fire protection in mines. Because this sleeving is non-expandable, it does not stretch, so it’s best for applications where you know the exact diameter of the items you need to protect.
Polyester Fabric—Polyester sleeving handles higher temperatures than nylon sleeving. However, it gets more damaged on rough surfaces.
Nylon Fabric—Nylon fabric sleeving is thicker than polyester fabric sleeving, so it withstands contact with rougher surfaces. However, it can’t handle temperatures as high.
