About Files
Files, also known as American-pattern and machinists' files, are used to remove material quickly.
Precision files, also known as Swiss-pattern files, are made to exacting measurements to ensure smoothness and are useful for finishing delicate and intricate parts.

Triangular Files

With three filing surfaces, these files work in spots others can't. They do not include a handle but do have a tang that fits into a handle. Length does not include the tang.
Single Cut—Surface has one set of diagonal teeth and is often used with light pressure to slowly remove material and file between saw teeth.

File Sets
Keep multiple files on hand for workpieces of different shapes and sizes.
All sets include American-pattern files, also known as machinists' files.
Double Cut—Surface has two sets of diagonal teeth and is often used with heavier pressure than single cut for rapid material removal.
Single Cut—Surface has one set of diagonal teeth and is often used with light pressure to slowly remove material and sharpen tool-cutting surfaces.
Files with wood handles have a durable grip that's shaped to fit comfortably in your hand.
Don't see the set you need? Create your own with a tool roll and individual files.

Files do not include a handle but do have a tang that fits into a handle. Length does not include the tang.
Single Cut—Surface has one set of diagonal teeth and is often used with light pressure to slowly remove material and sharpen tool-cutting surfaces.
Edges with no teeth protect adjacent surfaces when filing.

Single-cut tapered files with teeth on the edges are often used to sharpen milling and circular saws. Also known as mill files.
Single-cut tapered files with no teeth on the edges are often used to shape material on a lathe. Also known as lathe files.
Black-oxide finish resists rust and clogging.

Chain Saw Files
Slide these files between teeth on a chain saw to sharpen their cutting edges. They have a tang that fits into a handle. Length does not include the tang.
Round files, also known as blunt round files, are used to sharpen the teeth on full-chisel or semi-chisel chains. They have a knurled surface that’s designed for rapid material removal with heavy pressure.
Joint files, also known as depth gauge files, are used to modify the cut depth once the teeth are sharpened. These single-cut files have one set of diagonal teeth that slowly removes material with light pressure.

Chain Saw File Sets

With files, handles, and file guides, these sets come with everything you need to repair full- and semi-chisel chain saw teeth. First, sharpen the teeth with the round files—also called blunt round files. To achieve a consistent tooth height, use the round file guide to align the file with your chain. Then, use the joint file, also known as a depth gauge file, to adjust the cut depth. The joint file guide helps you set a consistent cut depth across the teeth. For hardwood, set the depth to 0.025"; for softwood, use 0.030".
