    Taps

Image of Product. Front orientation. Taps. Taps.
Cut threads into holes so screws, bolts, and rods fit snugly. Our basic taps have straight flutes that are good for most jobs.
High-Speed Steel—The most versatile taps resist heat and wear to stay sharp. They’re good for most metals and plastic.
Cobalt Steel—These taps resist higher temperatures and and last twice as long as high-speed steel taps. They thread hard materials such as iron and hardened steel without damaging their cutting edges.
Carbon Steel—The economical choice for occasional hand tapping. These work on most metals and plastic but will dull more quickly than other taps.
Uncoated—The economical choice, these won't last as long as coated taps.
Titanium Nitride (TiN) Coated—Run at higher speeds and last twice as long as uncoated taps.
Taper Chamfer—Good for both starting holes and threading through holes. These taps have the longest taper to gradually engage with the material, reducing the force needed to turn them. They can't reach the bottom of blind holes, however, so you will likely need to finish with a bottoming-chamfer tap.
Plug Chamfer—Our go-to chamfer type, these thread both through holes and blind holes. The tapered section is shorter than a taper chamfer and longer than bottoming chamfer. As a result, they're easier to turn than bottoming taps but require more force than taper taps.
Bottoming Chamfer—Cut all the way to the bottom of blind holes with taps that have the shortest taper. Since these require the most force to turn, they’re often used to finish holes started by taper- or plug-chamfer taps.
Number of Flutes—Taps with fewer flutes have more space to capture chips, so you won’t have to clear them as often. However, they can be more difficult to keep straight in the hole.
Taps Sold as Sets—Include one tap of each chamfer type.

    Tap and Die Sets

Image of Product. Front orientation. Tap and Die Sets.
Use a single set for many sizes of internal and external threads. The taps and dies are for use on most metal and plastic.
Carbon Steel—Carbon steel taps are for thread repair and occasional tapping.
Plug Chamfer—Plug-chamfer taps are a versatile choice for most tapping applications. With 3-5 chamfered cutting threads, they require moderate torque and are often used for start-to-finish tapping of through holes and closed-end holes. However, they do not start threads as easily as taper-chamfer taps. When using them to tap closed-end holes, be sure to leave sufficient space at the bottom for chips to accumulate.
Taper Chamfer—Taper-chamfer taps have 7-10 chamfered threads at the tip for cutting into the workpiece. They require less torque than other chamfer types, making them a good choice for starting threads and tapping through holes. However, a longer taper means that they cannot thread as close to the bottom of closed-end holes.
Hex—Hex-shaped dies are for thread repair and can be used with conventional wrenches.

    Spiral-Point Flute for Through Holes

Remove long, stringy chips to produce cleaner threads than standard taps. The flute design prevents buildup to protect the quality of the threads and avoid damage to the tap. Since you don’t need to reverse these taps to extract chips, they also create threads faster.
High-Speed Steel—The most versatile taps resist heat and wear to stay sharp. They’re good for most metals and plastic.
Uncoated—The economical choice, these won't last as long as coated taps.
Titanium Nitride (TiN) Coated—Run at higher speeds and last twice as long as uncoated taps.
Titanium Carbon Nitride (TiCN) Coated—Resist heat, chipping, and wear for three times the life of uncoated taps.
Spiral-Point Flute for Through Holes—Push chips ahead of the tap and out of through holes. Also known as gun taps.
Plug Chamfer—Our go-to chamfer type. With a longer taper than a bottoming chamfer, they are easier to turn but won't thread as close the bottom of a hole.

    Left-Hand Thread Taps

Image of Product. Front orientation. Taps. Left-Hand Thread Taps.
Create left-hand threads that prevent counter-clockwise rotating parts, such as flywheels and propellers, from loosening and spinning off. These taps have straight flutes that are good for most jobs.
High-Speed Steel—The most versatile taps resist heat and wear to stay sharp. They’re good for most metals and plastic.
Uncoated—The economical choice, these won't last as long as coated taps.
Taps Sold as Sets—Include one tap of each chamfer type.

Chip-Clearing Taps for Steel and Stainless Steel

    Spiral-Point Flute for Through Holes

Made of a high-vanadium alloy, these taps are harder and more wear-resistant than other high-speed steel taps.
Black Oxide—The dark finish increases wear resistance and reduces friction to improve chip flow, so these taps can last 50% longer than uncoated taps.

    Trapezoidal Thread Taps

Image of Product. Front orientation. Taps. Trapezoidal Thread Taps.
The metric version of Acme thread taps. These cut the broad threads found on lead screw nuts, linear actuators, vises, and other moving components. They have two sets of chamfered threads: the first for cutting a rough profile and the second for finishing it. They’re only for through holes since the two different chamfers can damage the workpiece if you reverse the tap. Once done threading, release the tap from the holder and remove it from the other side of the hole. Also known as tandem taps.

    Long-Reach Taps

Image of Product. Front orientation. Taps. Long-Reach Taps.
Thread holes that are hard to access or where obstructions make it difficult to turn a tap wrench. About twice as long other taps, these get you inside machines or through assemblies such as pulleys and belts. They have straight flutes that are good for most jobs.
High-Speed Steel—The most versatile taps resist heat and wear to stay sharp. They’re good for most metals and plastic.

    Spiral Flute for Through Holes

Avoid heat buildup that can deform material and prematurely wear taps when threading nickel alloys. The body on these taps narrows closer to the flutes for better coolant flow and less contact with the workpiece. Spiral flutes prevent stuck chips that can slow you down and decrease the quality of the threads.
Cobalt Steel—Tough and wear resistant, cobalt taps last twice as long as high-speed steel. They also can run at higher temperatures without damage to their cutting edges.
Black Oxide—The dark finish increases wear resistance and reduces friction to improve chip flow, so these taps can last 50% longer than uncoated taps.

Start threading a hole with one end of these taps and finish it with the other. The taper-chamfer end gradually engages with the material, reducing the force needed to turn the tool. Flip to the bottoming-chamfer end, which has a shorter tapered section, to thread all the way to bottom of holes. No special holder needed—turn these taps with an open-end wrench, or drive from either end using an L-key or ratchet wrench. Taps have straight flutes that are good for most jobs.

Quick-Change Hex Shank Drill Taps for Drills and Screwdrivers

Image of Product. Front orientation. Drill Taps. Quick-Change Hex Shank Drill Taps for Drills and Screwdrivers.
Save time when you need to change drill taps frequently. The grooved shank snaps directly into drills, power screwdrivers, and other tools that accept a 1/4" hex shank. However, these taps aren’t rated for impact drivers. With a drill bit point to drive into the workpiece, they can drill and tap holes in a single step. They’re made of high-speed steel and are for use on most metal and plastic.
These taps have a plug chamfer with 3-5 chamfered cutting threads, so they’re suitable for start-to-finish tapping.
Uncoated High-Speed Steel—Uncoated taps are strong enough for most tapping jobs but have the shortest tool life.
Spiral Flute—Taps with spiral flutes keep chips clear by drawing them back toward the tap and out of the hole.

Tap holes with a range of thread sizes 15 times faster than by hand. Made with an oversized shank and hardened high-speed steel, the taps in these sets are built to handle the high torque of impact wrenches to cut material quickly. Your wrench’s rapid hammering keeps these taps moving forward for smooth, continuous cutting. Those rapid blows also help break and clear chips as you cut, so you don’t need to pause and reverse, even in large holes and tough materials. This also means the tap is less likely to jam on chips and snap.
You’ll need a VersaDrive chuck (sold separately) to install these taps into your impact wrench. You can also get chucks for impact drivers (sold separately).
Hardened High-Speed Steel—Multiple Tap Thread Sizes
Titanium Nitride (TiN) Coated—Run at higher speeds and last twice as long as uncoated taps.
Taper Chamfer—Good for both starting holes and threading through holes. These taps have the longest taper to gradually engage with the material, reducing the force needed to turn them. They can't reach the bottom of blind holes, however, so you will likely need to finish with a bottoming-chamfer tap.

Cut a range of hole sizes two times faster than power drills, then thread them 15 times faster than by hand. Made with an oversized shank and hardened high-speed steel, the tools in these sets are built to handle the high torque of impact wrenches without snapping. The drill bits have a built-in pilot with a stepped tip that centers the bit, prevents slipping, and drills with one third the pressure of standard bits. Your wrench’s rapid hammering keeps the taps moving forward for smooth, continuous cutting. Those rapid blows also help break and clear chips as you cut, so you don’t need to pause and reverse, even in large holes and tough materials. Since your wrench absorbs kickback, it won’t fight you when a cutting tool snags, reducing wrist strain and fatigue over long jobs.
You’ll need a VersaDrive chuck (sold separately) to install the bits and taps into your impact wrench. You can also get chucks for impact drivers and magnetic-base drills (both sold separately). For jobs that don’t require the torque of an impact tool, you can fit these drill bits and taps directly into a 1/2" chuck on a standard power drill.
Titanium Nitride (TiN)-Coated Hardened High-Speed Steel Tools—Titanium nitride (TiN)-coated hardened high-speed steel tools have a longer tool life than carbon steel. They resist heat and wear better than uncoated tools, letting them last up to twice as long.

    13 Pieces

With everything but the impact wrench, these sets are the fastest way to prepare holes with a hand tool. They include a selection of cutting tools and a chuck that lets you swap them in and out of your impact wrench. Made with hardened steel, the cutting tools are built to handle the high torque of the wrench without snapping, even in hard metals. This also means the bits cut holes two times faster than with a power drill, and the taps thread holes 15 times faster than with a tap wrench. The rapid hammering breaks and clears chips as you work to prevent jams. Since your wrench absorbs kickback, it won’t fight you if a cutting tool snags, reducing wrist strain and fatigue over long jobs.
The chucks hold any tool with a VersaDrive hex shank—including countersinks and extractors—so just one chuck and wrench handle any cutting task.
13 Pieces—Includes a range of drill bits, taps, and step reamers. All cutting tools are coated with titanium nitride (TiN) to hold up at higher speeds and last longer than uncoated and oxide-coated bits, especially on tough materials like hardened steel and nickel.

Thread holes 15 times faster than by hand. Made with an oversized shank and hardened high-speed steel, these taps are built to handle the high torque of impact wrenches to cut material quickly.

Reduce stress on taps to produce clean, accurate threads. These holders work with BT taper CNC machines that don’t support rigid tapping. Also called tension and compression tap holders, they compress as the tap enters material and extend as it backs out, compensating for small spindle and feed rate mismatches. Not only does this protect the tap but also the threads you just cut. They’re often used when tapping through and blind holes with spiral-point and spiral-flute taps.
Their hardened steel shank resists wear. It’s also precision ground to the industry standard AT3 tolerance for a secure fit that minimizes runout in your machine spindle. They meet JIS standards for BT spindles to ensure compatibility. They have a threaded hole that accepts retention knobs, so they connect to your machine’s drawbar system.
Use these holders with tang-drive quick-change tap collets (also known as Bilz-style tap adapters) to swap taps in seconds and limit machine downtime. They are not compatible with ball-drive quick-change tap collets.
For the best performance, select a quick-change collet size that places your tap near the middle of the listed tap size range.

Hold quick-change tap collets on BT taper CNC machines capable of rigid tapping. These holders are rigid, so they move your tap in perfect sync with your machine's spindle speed and feed rate without any flex or compensation.
The hardened steel shank resists wear.
They are not compatible with ball-drive quick-change tap collets or quick-change tap collets with torque control.
For the best performance, select a quick-change collet size that places your tap near the middle of the listed tap size range.
